Help with timber flooring colour!

Hi all, first Houzz post here with a design dilemma on timber flooring 👋🏻

We’ve just started our first reno and in the process of selecting timber flooring. I love the light timber I’ve chosen (photo below) as I wasn’t a fan of the glossy wood that was previously in the home, but not sure if it looks good with the dark timber roof.

FYI we’ll be painting the walls white (right now they’re more of a taupe) if that makes a difference.

Thoughts?

Personally I'd choose something that tones in with the internal brickwork more. The plank you have chosen looks very yellow next to it.

Funnily enough , I thought it looks too close to the brick colour . To a certain degree , furniture and even art will negate some of the floor colour , and you probably don't want too many colours , but with white walls , a lighter brick and light floor , the dark roof will look worse IMO . I'd go a warm cedar or cherry or similar -- part way between the two 'ends' of the existing colour tones .

What a dilemma!! Any chance you could paint the skirting and doors and change the timber rail to a metal one? It's very hard to get so many timber colours to work together if they are not of a similar base colour. I suggest you do the new floor first, see how it looks and decide then. Maybe the hand rail can be stained darker?

Timber with timber can work brilliantly, and it's in keeping with the mid century style you want for your home. This room (below) is a little similar to yours, albeit with less of a pitch to the roof - the large feature lighting helps to break up the expanse of timber on the ceiling. You have a lovely open plan area, so I'd be inclined to use rugs to create zones and a cosy feel. Rugs reduce the impact of a large expanse of flooring material. They have the benefit that you can swap things around to change the look and layout at little cost. I think one trick may be to define your "walls" carefully, and paint these before you go with a new floor. This should give you a sense of whether the timber is overwhelming, and how to balance it. E.g. You might decide it works best to paint the kitchen cupboards to white, to give you a more seamless look and work with your new counter tops. If you want to experiment with the "paint ceiling" approach - gulp, it's a big one!! - then maybe that small section above the kitchen bench, at a different angle to the rest of the roof, could be the spot. It seems to have the same horizontal line as the wall, so even if you don't like the painted look for the whole, you might be able to get away with blending this into the walls. Best of luck!

If you are after a durable and stable timber floor then Spotted Gum is superior to an engineered floor. But there are many others like Turpentine, Blackbutt, Brush Box, Mahogany to name a few. Having said that the installation process for both are completely different. The longest lasting timber flooring system is Australian Hardwoods installed over Hardwood Battens. Having been in timber flooring in Sydney for over 57 years our experience with trying different products always brings us back to Australian Hardwoods. Selecting a grade of timber does not translate into colours it is merely the quality of the timber board ie in the imperfections of nature - Select Grade has less gum vein and grub marks than say Standard Grade - however if you choose a commercial named grade then you get whatever the suppliers offers in their own grading. Oh and by the way be aware that many imported products are products with Formaldehyde which is toxic. But I agree with Paul if you are after uniformity then you need to go with an engineered product, the beauty of hardwoods lies in the variation so that no two timber floors will be exactly the same. Hope this helps a little more - being a tradesman we do not necessarily base our choices on colours but rather performance of the timbers which varies from species to species.

Hi Andrew, I think you are asking what type of timber you can use to match your floors. You may like to consider either Karri, ( or Spotted Gum, Nyatoh or Tasmanian Blackwood) as these are readily available hardwood timbers in this varigated tone and grain pattern you have. It is also worth noting that Timbers that start out with red in them also actually fade over time to turn this nutty colour. Once you decide on a spiecies, your Cabinet Maker may also be able to hand pick colours to get the closest match. Hope this helps; regards Malcolm.

Your previous flooring does not need to stay glossy . It can be redone in a matt or satin . Maybe do a few boards to see how it looks ? I would paint between the beams as the ceiling seems oppressive .

The sample in the pics does look a bit yellow. I’d stay well away from anything with a red or yellow tone. I love your ceiling and it’s a feature to try and keep but as it is domineering you need to be careful of your other choices. Is the sample board a pre-finished board? On one hand that’s good because you can see the final colour but on the other hand it’s bad because the final colour is lot quite right.

Thanks everyone! I didn’t feel like it was quite right so glad my fears were validated haha. We’ll probably go with a darker hue / less yellow ☺️

PS forgot to mention - the old floor was laminate and damaged in some areas, so we decided to replace it. Sadly sanding it down wasn’t an option!
