I think your last sentence says it all !! Definitely get a pro if that's how you feel. Huge $$$ can be wasted by making mistakes in the design/planning phase. There are a million things to take into consideration, especially with kitchen, bathrooms and laundry.

you want to hire a professional and he wants to do all the work himself but you will find that there is plenty of work for both as there is much that cannot be done by amateurs and no choice for a lot of the work ... bathrooms are very complex and need careful timing of numerous separate stages that must be completed in the correct order with trades having to coma and go several times during the renovation and there is very little that the homeowner can diy and, unless you already have guaranteed contacts with a plumber, electrician, waterproofer, tiler and carpenter who can drop all their other work and come to your job immediately when needed and you have an endless supply of time to manage the trades as well as choose and arrange delivery of all the fixtures and fittings in the right quantities and suitable for your specific job and a spare bathroom to use for many weeks or months during construction, a bathroom is the worst job to start with...as a person who has organised numerous renovations i have to say that renovations often uncover major hassles that destroy the best laid plans and we've discovered that a professional can often organise work faster and cheaper than we can do ourselves so we usually prefer to hire a builder to control the whole job and make cost saving elsewhere like diy deck, fencing, minor demolition, rubbish removal, painting, flatpac assembly for kitchen and laundry cabinets etc etc...you will be stunned at how much work there will be to do and, even if you decided to have a professional control all the work, i would not start with a bathroom...test your DIY skills and patience on smaller jobs that won't make the house uninhabitable if/when there are delays and a basic low deck would be the simplest but you should make a detailed plan of what you would like to do for the whole house and gardens (don't forget general house repairs and fences, driveways and any potential extensions) and then hire an electrician and plumber to check all existing wiring, pipes, roof and gutters to see what needs fixing and discuss some of your ideas with them first and then finalise a plan for all the changes

A common problem for those that decide to wing it, is that they only realize how much they don't actually know, when they need to know it! Best way to devalue a house and waste a lot of money is by learning by your mistakes. However the best thing you can do is to live in your house for a full 12 months before you start splashing the cash on renovations. Only after 12 months will you realize if the kitchen/laundry/bathroom is the most important issue, or whether you should spend your money on heating/cooling, insulation, a new hot water system etc.

Best of luck with your considerations - and at least have a chat with a few professionals to understand the different services that they can offer, and to work out how much work you can do yourselves.
