I’ve just bought a 1960’s style apartment in Melbourne and want to change the locks (it was previously a rental). On getting a locksmith out to do a quote, the door was suspected to be filled with asbestos and needs to be replaced. The locksmith also mentioned that I needed to replace it with a fire rated door as my dwelling is within an apartment building. My research shows that to replace the door (and dispose of the old one), I’m looking at $1,800 - $2,000. Each fire rated door company I called seemed about surprised to take my call, leading me to suspect that it’s not a common thing to do. Has anyone else had this dilemma?
