Hi all, I'm wondering on what ideas people could suggest to boost the appearance of the front of the house. I'm thinking a fresh lick of paint so far. Thanks in advance

Are both balconies and garage doors yours? Where is the front door?

Hi dreamer, it's a strange one, there is no front door - you go round the side on the right hand side. Both garages are mine and the balcony is one balcony - it just looks like two.

I agree with several other commentators. I love the look of your house, arches & all. Retro is in! I would pretty much leave as is & concentrate on cleaning concrete & landscaping. You will be amazed at what a difference good landscaping will make to the street appeal. With the right colors in your planting you might even come to like the look of your home like most of us already do. In a busy world the last thing you want is more upkeep & I think you would be making a rod for you own back if you render or paint the brick. And keeping it true to the era could add to its resale value. The only things I would change is the color of the garage doors & facia to either Dulux Natural White or Antique White USA whichever you prefer & the gates black if you want to be safe or a bolder contrasting color. As for the window frames I keep tossing up between the black & the white. Maybe black window frames with black gates would look good. I like all the garden ideas ( it does look a bit sparse and 'rental property' look about it IMO ) , with a low fence along the front , a wooden screen a couple of metres in front of the door , etc , BUT when I looked at the very first photo -- the wider angle one -- the one thing you notice first is the yellow marker post on the left hand side of the driveway fence . So take that as a cue , and paint the garage door a bright colour to stand out -- primary or metallic or trendy , just one that you like , and personally I'd probably change the curtains ( or even dye them ) to the same colour as the garage door . Right now , everything is various derivatives of off-white and red brown earth brick -- needs a decent spot of colour to lift the houses look IMO . Another option would be 'natural' timber blinds , especially if you had them the same shade of stain as the screen and the front fence , but I'd still do the garage door ( and maybe the guttering ) your current favourite colour .

Wow, what a great looking house! You don't need to distract from its pure form and honesty of materials by introducing "decorative" elements that will detract from the clean lines of the architecture. If anything you should be following the original intent and simplifying it. Possibly lining the underside of the verandahs to conceal the exposed and contrasting beams. Your decorative pot is just so wrong with the house - give it to somebody who has a Tuscan style villa. Architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886–1969) adopted the motto "Less is more" to describe his aesthetic. His tactic was one of arranging the necessary components of a building to create an impression of extreme simplicity—he enlisted every element and detail to serve multiple visual and functional purposes. With your house remember "Less is more". If you hate the aesthetic of your house I am sure that there will be a pretty, decorative Hamptons style house for sale in your suburb soon, just don't try to change the style of your home with unessary decoration. Thanks @siriuskey. We had the same thought, but our builder said the frame style moulding is for interior use only and would perish in 2-5 years in the full sun on the front of the house. Perhaps there is moulding that is suitable for outdoor use... I do like the look. One of our neighbours has done it (blue-grey paint, white window frames) and it looks good. We have done the kitchen window in the back as an experiment; it is undercover and out of the sun though. I like the grey idea, but our neighbour's house is shades of grey (not like the book ;) and we didn't want to be too matchy-matchy. We might have another think about the paint... thank you for your comments. :)

i quite like the existing colours but would prefer both garage doors to be the same and something to highlight the side entry and widen the look of the house eg a narrow wall hung pergola across the whole house and extending to a chunky post a the side, the fence could have extra steel cladding on your side (or paint in a dark colour to match your gutters) to hide the framing, add extra height to the fence with horizontal extension to screen the neighbours downstairs windows, some big pavers over the patch of gravel to help highlight the entry path and a giant potted plant on the right hand side and underplant the trees with big strappy plants

I quite like the colours also, highlighting your entry would look great and completely change the look, it could be a simple or covered in structure, decking outside the door looks great and makes a beautiful entrance, plant up around the letter box.. gorgeous
