'Must have' vs 'nice to have' when it comes to heating!
Comments (2)We are in a warmer area however put in undertile (inscreed) heating in the bathrooms. It is great. As it is not in the slab it does not take long to heat up and we have it on a thermostat which works well. It cost about $1000 for two bathrooms. A larger area would be cheaper as much of the cost was in the timer, thermostat and controls. We then did not bother with a tastic thing on the ceiling which is inefficient and just have a nice light fitting and a plain exhaust fan. I would see it as a must have. You might only have options for underfloor heating under a tiled floor with an existing slab. Have a think about slow combustion. They are dirty and dusty. The wood is a lot of work and can be expensive depending on your area. They may also take up a lot of space in your house and you need to have them close to a door to bring the wood in. They work for us at the moment as I am at home with young children. When I was at work it was an insufferable chore to get the fire going of an evening when I got home from work and there was washing to be brought in. I would see it as a "nice to have if you have the space, time and wood" Think about your lifestyle are you at home a lot or just after work? This will impact on what you need. I would go gas if I had access to it. Just make sure whatever system you have has zones and a programmable timer to reduce cost. Reinsulating your roof goes without saying and will make a big difference....See MoreHelp!! Is the bath room big enough to have a double vanity of 1.5m
Comments (46)@mlk01, You are right about the message button, I have it on my profile but no one else seems to so that's odd! If you click on my profile for example, you will see on the top line right beside the profile picture: Your house, Ideasbook, Bookmarks, Activities, Messages. In fact I remember that when anyone typed a reply like I'm doing now, you used to be able to click a "private" button, which meant only the person you were typing to saw your comment. Perhaps Houzz can answer these anomalies?? I'm not on Facebook or Twitter, never got into it and have no reason to do so anytime soon ha-ha As for talking privately to someone, you could post your email address here as could oklouise and delete it whilst you are still able to edit, as I've done once in the past. Just not sure how long the edit feature lasts....See MoreColour decision: Window frames and gutters/eaves
Comments (15)No worries, Emma. I envy anyone who can picture an outcome from a 5x4cm colour swatch. I can’t. I need a bigger, more realistic visual clue. We’ve been through the same mind changes with selections too, including whether to render or not. We were fearful of creating lifelong work, fixing potential cracks in the render and repainting. In the end, we decided to leave it alone, and have an unassuming (or even deceptive) street look that makes everyone go ‘wow’ when they walk through the door because inside is not what they expected from the outside. We’ll see how the house dates in the years to come and re-visit the idea of rendering at that time. But like you, my main prob is the colour of the window frames. I’ve spray painted some internal frames. They look heaps better. Just gotta get motivated to do some more!...See MoreBuilding a single story home
Comments (106)Ashjean I have had a play with your house and suggest the following very basic layout at this time to see if you like it I would have the garage on the Battleaxe drive way along with laundry, bathroom and study, this could be built on the boundary with the eaves on this side reduced if needed, Windows would be high light up under any eaves. I suggest that the bedrooms are on the western boundary which will be quieter and cooler with plantings, the hard surfaces of the driveways will store any day time heat that will be released over night Keeping the floorplan simple with removing the extra passage to separate the bedrooms and bathroom and using a simple roof without too many extra ridges will save you money. Can you please confirm the front width of your block and the length...See MoreJeba kumar
