Help! With living room layout

Hi team,

I am looking for some help with the layout of tv and furniture for our living area as it is quite small .Due to the layout of the house we walk through the house through this room to access the kitchen, bedrooms bedrooms,living room and the backyard.

The room will be our second living area so does need a tv, seating for when friends are over somewhere to sit and talk. We don't have any furniture yet.

My dilemma is where to place the tv wall mounted. We are thinking of the small where as seen in pics below, but with no tv unit below. my hisband thinks people will walk into it when coming around the corner. I think a tv mounted on the wall will be to bare. I also think the wall is too small for floor to celing cabinerty. If we move tv to large wall i think the space is too small. Photos below was from staging when we purchased house.

Appreciate any assistance.

Make the triangular space a cubby or drawing area or lego space.

You have a lot of rooms. Do you need two dining areas? I’d move the TV watching to the dining near the front door. And leave the space you are talking about just for sitting and talking.

Thanks for the reply. The dining room next to front door is going to be enclosed and used as a home office. Tell me about it! so much furniture to buy to fill rooms. We have 2 toddlers so we need the space !

One other comment. We have a bedroom off the great room but we set the door back by building out the wall with a fireplace. It helps with sight lines. We used built ins on the left to hide the TV when we have company, and the fireplace is a woodburning BIZ which heats the entire house (we live in a forest,,) the side is for firewood storage and we keep matches, batteries, flashlights in that area, but it does help when our guests are on the sofa from seeing right into the bedroom.

try a wall hung TV opposite the fireplace and a symmetrical arrangement will give a view of the tv and the fireplace

How about close off door from entry, TV on far wall, couch currently on far wall moved to be L shape with the other couch, and then you wouldn't be blocking the windows. TV def needs to move away from the windows.

Without sizes of the furniture and the wall sizes it's almost impossible to suggest much . IF everything is to scale , you probably can't have a 3 seater couch , because even if you put it along the 'picture window' side , there doesn't look to be much room for a TV and cabinet , and definitely not speakers and turntable , on the opposite wall . Spin 90 degrees , and the TV would go between the entry and bedroom doors , but the fire is in the way of a couch position ( 2 armchairs would be okay by the looks ) ; likewise the couch along by the window is then at a strange angle to everything , but the stereo along the other wall may work , although wiring behind the fire mightn't be best .

If it was me is put the tv in the music room and avoid it in such a thoroughfare zone which is not really conducive to relaxing.

Thank you for reply. Yes music room will be set up as theartre/ games room. We would like a tv in living room so the kids can sit there whilst playing or eating and i can see them from meals area.

Have you had an opinion on the removal of the angled wall? It adds nothing to the space but makes furniture arrangements difficult.

I was thinking this may work or too bulky? do i have the wall cut out to recess tv and a unit?

@bigreader yes that is in the plan in about 2 years as we need to run steel in celing to hold the celing up. also dont have thr tiles to replace where we knock out that wall

If the plan is for the wall to go don’t spend money on specific cabinetry. What about the display furniture doesn’t suit you? It seems to be the best of a bad situation. And if you have those furniture pieces you can shuffle them and try different layouts to suit.

So if you’re setting up the formal dining as an office, what is the study going to be?
Proves that a home with lots of rooms is not an advantage. You could have less rooms and a better space. You said you have two toddlers, so I would set up their play space with tv, in the music room, away from the awkward thoroughfare. with all the toys they probably have it will be a contained space. Use the formal lounge room as the theatre room. Or the other way around. If they are eating then they do not need a tv to distract them.You say you only have two children, that’s a lot of rooms for two children. Use the awkward thoroughfare room as a lounge room to talk, away from any tv.
