Timber or tiles
I have recently purchased a lovely old solid 60’s home that I am planning to fully renovate. It has a mix of tiles and timber through the living, dining and kitchen. I would like to replace with one flooring throughout but I’m stuck on timber vs tiles. The timber sample in the picture is a Boral Engineered Blackbutt which looks lovely but I’m very worried about scratches and durability with two kids and a dog. Is there anyway with tiles for it to still bring a sense of warmth? Light travertine? I absolutely love the durability of tiles but I’m worried about it feeling stark as we live in a cold climate. We would definitely have lovely big rugs through living and dining with tiles. Thanks for your thoughts.

Comments (5)Timber all the way. We are lucky enough to have parquetry through our entry, living, dining and kitchen areas. When we moved in my MIL suggested we pull it up and put tiles and we both said NO! Tiles can be very cold (even if you get heating, it looks like a cold home). Also I feel it makes everything echo, especially if you have a large space. Don't worry about timber in the kitchen or wet areas. Think about where wood comes from and what it goes through. Comments (5)It sounds like your tiles are a warm brown, so a warm white will certainly work well. Natural White and Antique White USA are good ones, but there are many more. Grey is also a popular option, and again you might look at the warm greys to see if you like any. I would try to stay in the lighter grey tones. Also, you may want to take into consideration the materials and colour scheme of your kitchen and bathrooms, as well as your furniture and decor (artwork etc) when contemplating a white or grey....See MoreJ AH79

2 years agoNothing wrong with timber look tiles. They do not look stark. With tiles, do not install shiny tiles, then it would look stark and uninviting.
Install a Matt tile, with a rectified edge. It really is personal choice, and if your home is 1960,s then engineered wood may suit that home better.

The tiles are rectified and with minimal grout. Because they are long, the tiler installed using clips which stop the tiles from bowing. I have attached pics which hopefully are helpful. I am not at home at the moment to check the name but can get back to you after the weekend on that. The curved area is our ensuite and real timber was not compatible with the curve. I wouldn’t have done that but we didn’t build the house so had to work around it

2 years agoWe have blackbutt timber with a low semi-gloss finish throughout the house. This is our second timber floor over 15 years - last one was water damaged. In that time we have had 2 teenage kids, one of them nick named ‘Gigantor’ so you can imagine the kind of damage possible! The new floor has a crazy Irish Terrier pup sliding and skidding all over it and so far no scratches. The wood floors have been fantastic to clean and have been very hard wearing - some scratches and dents are unavoidable but I still think timber floors look and feel so much nicer than tiles, especially in a gorgeous 60’s house.
