Just a few simple changes would make a big difference. A colourful rug, some throws on the lounge and a picture above the lounge and white blinds unless you're not too worried about the budget then you could repaint. If you got a new bigger light timber tv cabinet with shelves for books and some nice items. You could also put the front lounge with the back facing the dining room so you're not walking directly into the lounge as you come through the front door. And put a narrow table behind the lounge

A really big rug under couches and coffee table, reaching all the way out to the tv cabinet. And some taller plants, particularly in that corner between the couches.

A lovely lamp in the corner of your couch, a large rug, textured cushions and a large artwork above your couch, group your plants together staggering the heights … gorgeous.

I agree with the posts here. Definitely get an anchoring rug large enough to have at least the front legs of your sofas on it. Get an artwork for behind your sofa that ties in/complements some of the colours you are using in the room (cushions, rug, decor). A floor lamp for some layered lighting would also be a good idea. Julie's examples would work great in your space.
Also as Kelly said, if space permits, it might be a good idea to move that lounge that's under the window to the opposite side and add a narrow console table behind it. That way you could also add something next to your doorway to define it as a separate space.

I would move the TV to the opposite wall and have the lounge on that wall with the chaise on the dining room end, as all ready mentioned a large rug, lamps and a sofa table. do you have a photo of the whole space. and possibly a slatted screen at the end of the sofa facing the front door

Thank everyone for your help. Here’s some photos of the rest of the open space aka the dining area. We do like the idea of open flow between the living and room space. Again I appreciate all your ideas. More are welcome :)

Adding to my first post, a screen similar to this next to the couch when it's repositioned. swaping the TV with the lounge will also give a view of the TV from the kitchen

I'd move all the furniture closer to dining area

not sure what is the sizes of your living room, if space is enough, I would like to suggest this:

The basics -- a big rug ( as everyone else has suggested ) but I'd go for 3 artworks -- one larger one at least 1.2 x 1 metre , 2 around half that size . I like abstracts , so I'd go for 3 in similar tone and theme , lots of vibrant colours trowelled on . You could even mix around a central theme -- say the larger one an abstract yacht at sea , in 4 or 5 blues with splashes of red and orange and green and white etc . Then 2 smaller ones with say a surfboard on one , a dolphin on the other , all with similar colours and tones .

It may be a trick of the light , but the dining table and side table look to be actual wood , the lounge tv unit and table look more like a veneer or similar . Similar colours , but different looks . I like actual wood , so that would be the direction I'd head for .

Kelly said about going white blinds -- personally , I'd go timber in that darker stain ( like the dinig table etc ) -- IMO you don't want too much white , but also to tie in with all your timber furniture .

And finally , cushions in colours that are strong in the abstract pictures -- maybe royal blue and bright red and sunny yellow -- the couch is a yellowy beige ( not a favourite with me ) but well chosen art and cushions will brighten and attract your attention in a good way .
