Long narrow lounge room layout ideas

Our long narrow loungeroom is tricky. We have a 4 seater lounge in front of the window, TV is mounted above fireplace. We have autistic kids so we have indoor climbing frame and a XL beanbag which are placed/moved around in the empty freespace. At the moment there is a mid century cupboard and separate small bookcase on the right hand side of plan, creating storage at both ends. There is some built in shelving below TV (very small depth so difficult beyond small display).

Is placing the storage at each narrow end the right way to do it? Or should I be using the vast expanse of wall on the right hand side of sliding door?

How wide is the couch? Could tv move to long wall so opp the couch? Or couch turned to face tv creating some zoning or is turning back to kids a bad idea in your household?

I think you could shorten the internal length of the walk in by robe by about 700mm & open up the space just outside it for a dresser & mirror. Have a double sliding door to the ensuite which for the most part could stay open or closed depending on your preference. This creates a dressing area connected to the ensuite like a foyer space to give hubby some swinging room & make narrow open shelving on the right hand wall inside the robe but not all the way to the door leaving a space for a small chair or stool at the entry. Have the left hand side all hanging having some full length & some split high & low for shirts etc...

oh good point and good idea - thanks! I would like this room to be a functioning lounge room for two adults, one teen and one grown up child still living at home - where we can chill and watch TV/DVD's sporting events with friends etc. Warm and comfy with some modern touches (fabric lounge suite in neutral/grey tones is what I have been drawn to) - Now to search some ideas on Houzz.

Personally, I'd paint the walls, doors, skirtings, cornice and ceiling the same light colour - I'd also see what could be done with the lights - they're cutting off the height of the room. Think about closing off entrances that you don't need and if you are unable to do that, then by painting doors the same colour as everything else you're lessening the immediate impact of the entrances. I'd also go for curtains that match the colour of the walls - the idea is that your eye moves over the room rather than landing on one surface (I'd use textures rather than colour to bring interest and a sense of comfort and luxury to the room). If you're looking to keep the room as a lounge/living room - I'd be tempted to go for chairs rather than lounges to give the illusion of more space and more flexibility with lay out. As the lounge in the photo just looks as though it was too big and you pushed it to the side to make if fit. I'd also streamline all furniture you have for your entertainment - go for narrow unit and mount the TV on the wall. For any wall art - I'd elect to get rid of anything small and go for long rectangular pieces to add to the height of the room.

Hi dreamer, is there a reason not remove the door? Something structural perhaps? The doors lead to a entry way which is v dark and they are always open to allow more light. We have an issue with our heater thermostat- if the door is shut the heaters read the temp in this room as too low and cook us! I love your idea of the extra chairs and small table in the bay window! There aren’t any power points between the doors but that could be rectified. Thanks everyone for your helpful suggestions. Also as we have a private front garden, should I remove the drapes and have the windows bare? Any thoughts on room colour- I think the cream is a bit dated....

I grew up in a home with a similar living room, so have three points that you might consider. Most importantly, where are the walkways? If there is any kind of thoroughfare, keep it as clear and as direct as possible. Secondly, is this the only lounge space and if so, how do you use it? So many variables, and the lovely and clever Houzz people will need that information to really help you. And finally, and what worked for us, consider splitting into two connected zones. Table for reading, games and craft (or occasional chairs and coffee table) at end furthest from television. Settee against rhs wall (most comfortable side if you’re right handed) and two occasional chairs at 45 degrees along the lhs wall. Chairs that swivel, or are light enough to turn for conversation. Side tables at either end of the settee. Low, narrow unit or coffee table against the wall between the chairs closest to the television. Retain storage units each side of the fireplace / television and other end of the room. Putting them on the long wall will simply create a corridor effect

**** Substitute beanbag for an occasional chair, or place nearby at the same angle, at television end and climbing frame next to furniture on far end wall. This would allow them to still be movable but to have an allocated space
