What do I do with the weird overhang in my kitchen?
Hi! Very excited to be planning a new kitchen for our house but I'm completely stumped on a design aspect and was hoping folks might have some ideas/inspiration. I've attached a photo of the area in question. We want to get rid of the that ridiculous overhang, and it's simple enough to just run a normal wall where it is. My issue is how to finish off the section along the side and top of the pantry, where the odd, angular wall is. We could make it square, I suppose, but then you're going to come down those stairs and look straight on to the top of the pantry and fridge etc which I feel will a) look weird and b) lead to way too much awkward dusting for my liking!! In an idea world we'd probably make it a corner pantry on the other side but unfortunately the window is placed such that there isn't enough depth for a pantry to fit (that corner has the microwave on some bench space, currently).
I can almost (almost) see how they ended up with the absurd overhang in the first place given how stumped I am on how otherwise to finish that section off! Please, please, if you have any ideas at all I would love to hear them!

2 years agoYou can start it’s minimal cutback as per my pick. Personally I’d remove it all and build cabinets to match top is stair doorway.

I also thought the comeback was unnecessarily aggressive & unwarranted. I would keep whatever you put there quite subtle and simple in colour so it doesn't draw the eye. You've got a nice retro/scandi feel from the look of it, see it as another way to carry this through?! So some ideas: - a small succulent in a low 1-2" pot, possibly including a trailing one such as Silver Falls (though don't let it get too out of hand!), will help make it look less compartmenty. Comments (27)I was just looking over all the advice and the drawings that have been done for me showing how paint would look in various places. Thank you so much everyone for the time and help that you have given me - plus your honest opinions. I have decided that over the long term, all of the raw timber on the walls will go, but I may also remove a section of the wall joining kitchen to loungeroom. I am not sure whether it will be removed and sheeted or whether it will be sheeted over in some places, and painted in others. What I decide is going to determine what the architraves and window frames look like, because to sheet over the timber means that the current architraves will not be thick (deep) enough. A carpenter has already suggested just using painted MDF due to the difficulty in getting timber architraves at present and their cost. These are decisions that I am not ready to make yet. I have no idea whether it would be best to keep timber window frames and door frames or whether to just have white. Your opinion on this would be appreciated too. For now, the lounge room and entry wall will be painted. The undercoat will start to tell me whether all white or black and white is better. I have a painter coming tomorrow to start. I will be doing some painting too, but I know he will prepare it a lot better than me....See More

2 years agoI would totally remove that roof and use Gyprock in place of the timber cladding and expose part of the R/H steps, ie: cut that part of the wall back. You could consider a highlight window in the new wall opposite both upper doors to possibly allow light back into that passage way. Another photo looking at the fridge wall and roof straight on would help.

2 years agoIts very quirky and different, I quite like it. Why don't you just have a buffet unit there for all your odd glass serving dishes that every house has and doesn't use. Put a rolling ladder there to reach it. Cant really tell what's going on with the cabinetry
