Can you help a bloke with some colour scheme ideas?

I'm about to finalise purchase on a new house but before moving in I would like to repaint as it currently very.....beige. I'm looking for some inspiration and colour scheme ideas that will freshen the place up and make it mine.

Congrats on the new home, Fred. I agree with Kate, keep most of your colour for a nice rug, artwork, curtains etc., furniture with a more cohesive, modern look and perhaps add tap ware and handles to match the upgraded lighting. An alternative to white walls, would be to add just the palest, palest of colours. Just a touch of blue or green? Enough only that you might not notice unless you looked. Sample pots are your friend here, as are paint specialist stores. Stay away from any colour with a yellow/red/brown, in fact any warm, undertone (undertone is totally different from colour). Search Houzz photos to see if anything which has a beige base appeals, it will give you some idea of what direction to take, and that’ll be helpful when speaking with the professionals too

I’d repaint the wall snowy mountain quarter to reduce amount of beige and leave ceiling and cornice white. Then add your colours to furnishings, art, kitchen appliances. I’d also replace the lights above the island as whilst nice I would do something more dramatic, these are just nice/safe if you get my meaning.
Providing further advice you need to get an interior decorator to talk to you about your preferences and furniture to put together a scheme.

Hi Sabi, You have a great light kitchen with lots of window, so be wary of darkening the effect too much if you like the current feel. As all your existing storage is concealed behind cupboard doors, to add an extra dimension to the space, you could consider some open storage for display of all your 'nice' pieces. Your kitchen looks to be a traditional style, so it would be easy to find a tall (or even a bench height unit to give you more space) that fits in with your scheme. See the image I have attached below. Misshayley's suggestion of a glass splash back would work well, just remember that the colour of the year (Masala) may be "on trend" now, but designers rarely advise you go with on trend items that are expensive to replace. You could then select a few accessories to display in the kitchen area that carry that colour through the space. Perhaps a feature wall nearby painted in this, as it is less costly to repaint if you tire of it. Add some greenery to the room for a fresh look & great contrast with the Masala. Glass splash backs are great if you want to avoid the work of having to keep tile grout clean. regards, Lisa Elliott

I am thinking Woodland Grey may be a great roof colour option to give you more options but give of a hint of green if you wanted to play on that or warm greys. If you are thinking silver is a better roof option it may depend on your thoughts about what your facade colours are. I would consider keeping your gutters darker and the fascias and any barge boards to fit together in some combination. Hard to know which path to follow without your intended exterior colour thoughts. Silver and White is a great combination if you are thinking of modernising. Silver and darker colours if you wanting a more classic update.

How much of your house re you wanting to paint ? Is it just the new wlls shown in the pictures ? Wht are your favourite colours ? For a bright , happy colour scheme , if you are just wanting to do the room in the pictures , and you are leaving that brown wall that colour , then I would go mainly white but with a bright sunflower yellow feature wall , similar coloured rug or a couple of chairs ( even chairs in a off-white fabric but with yellow 'flowers' ( any geometric shape ) and/or yellow piping ) . If you can go with any colour , write down your preferences . Some vibrant blues or greens or purples or teals may fit your tastes , or red or yellow or orange or burgundy . Predominantly white with black , but with 3 shades of grey / charcoal may work ( even with a vibrant red or yellow or kermit green used sparingly in accessories ? ) . How long is a piece of string -- everyone has different tastes , and some colours don't work together well , but without knowing all the info , it's pretty hard to make too many suggestions .

Agree painting the walls a soft white would instantly update the look, choose a great sofa, dining table and chairs, rugs and soft furnishings, artwork that you love, adding a hint of black always looks luxurious

What is your favourite colour ?

Even just glancing above , look at Kates inspiration shot , the one with the blue rug and blue themed abstract pic !

Hell , even look at the 'actual' pictures of yours , and see the tan stools -- you know the colour is 'safe' when tan stools are the highlight haha . I love tan , but it needs more !

Now imagine your kitchen , with the 2 lots of tiles redone in say yellow ( or blue or red or purple if its your favourite ) , the lightshades in yellow etc , a yellow juicer and half a dozen of those yellow and white placemats on the kitchen benches ! So $1000 or so , stage 1 done .

Maybe in a couple of years ( or weeks if you are impatient haha ) , repaint the beige in a lighter tone -- have fun , maybe even have it slowly changing and evolving !

Until you live in the house and get a real feel for it , I would do as others have suggested and paint the walls a warm white, then step back.

Use your current furniture and reassess piece by piece.

Definitely bring in some colour of your choice, but only do it for now with items that are easily replaceable - such as cushions, plants, paintings, bed linen - or by painting a wall.

You really need to live in the space, see where light falls, how your things sit in it and how you feel in it before making big design decisions.

Hi there,

I would consider having the kitchen cabinetry painted as well, it looks to me like your floor tiles are taupe, bench is a warm taupeish grey and cool grey carpet.

Consider (with checking samples) Dulux Vintage Linen for your cabinetry and Dulux Lexicon Quarter for the walls.

These will compliment the greys and taupes, it will cool down the interior a bit but that will allow the warmth within the greys and taupes to come through.

Consider updating the pendant lights.
