Seeking design advice - replacing vinyl cladding with colourbond

Hello seeking some honest feedback, we have cream vinyl cladding on the second story ( it needs to be replaced - as keeps flying off the house every time we have wild winds - twice this year). As you will see in the photo below, the house is nothing special to look at. To add a point bit of difference, I'm thinking about recladding the second story in colourbond (considering both corrugated or wider flat sheets). dark grey ( woodland grey or monument). we were planning on replacing the guttering and painting window frames, eaves, etc in a charcoal colour, note sure if this would still work with dark grey cladding, could be to much?

Interested in any thought about the cladding idea, including colour schemes, or any other suggestions.

Dark roof, cladding and windows will be too much. I’d stick to a lighter cladding but change windows, gutters and garage door to dark.

I'd go the same colour as your garage doors so it blends in. Then you can have the gutters darker if you choose

Hi, we are extending upstairs over a older red brick home. we have Ironstone windows, gutters, roof. We are going to render the extension but don't want to go lighter like a Dune colour but more of a medium grey. We will be replacing our posts and garage door with timber (also have a timber gate) so I feel like we can get away with a darker grey upstairs render. Do you know a good medium grey that goes well with Ironstone? Initially I was thinking Simone Weil and maybe even Guild Grey if it's not too dark?

Hi iggs85 as it is an older kitchen I would not spend a huge amount of money on a revamp. It is definitely possible to paint laminate but good preparation is vital to ensure the paint 'sticks'. However a quality painter is going to charge you about the same as your resurfacing quote. Using either a painter or a resurfacing company does let you choose any colour though. The biggest disadvantage of the current benchtop is the bullnose which is very dated. From your photo, the colour and pattern look OK but you could get a stone 'overlay' put on it. They square off the bullnose so it looks more contemporary. An acrylic feature panel on the return is another alternative to vinyl planks. It looks like glass, comes in a good range of colours and is relatively inexpensive compared to glass. See http://zenolite.com/range as an example. You can buy acrylic sheets from Bunnings. You could also use pressed metal panels as a feature eg. http://www.wunderlite.com.au/catalogue/details/1/79/pressed-metal-crystal?start=25 Add some new handles on doors and drawers too.

Just to confirm I have taken the great ideas presented here as advice only and have no intention to do some dodgy diy reno's. With the exception of a couple of quirky exposed timbers as you can see in my pictures there are no other exposed beams. As you can also see from the pictures there is a large roof space on the right (east) side of the house but the ceilings themselves are flat with a slight dip on the north wall. Based on my own personal experiences I would have to agree with Two's Company that there is a tendency towards rendered brick in WA (although there are still many exposed brick houses in my suburb) while double enclosed double garages are also highly desirable. I would also agree that toilets within the main bathroom and non traditional laundries may be considered unusual by many (but not all). Ensuites with toilets however are still very common. Also due to the nature of our work we would prefer the laundry separated from food/kitchen area. For a 4x2 house it is only around 155m2 excluding carport/alfresco which makes the rooms feel quite cramped, hence the desire to open up the family room. However, as Two's Company suggests we will need to first get a builder/eng in to check load bearing walls etc as this will undoubtedly affect what we can achieve within our budget. Having said that I still excited by many of your ideas and with luck hopefully can work some of them into the budget. Cheers all :)

Hi SonaandDi, In case you haven't come across it, here is the link to my finished kitchen: https://www.houzz.com.au/discussions/5598603/renovation-of-our-1956-red-brick-triple-fronted-home-all-done This layout has the potential for issues, but I tried to factor those in by noting where the fridge doors came to when fully opened. I should have allowed a little more width for the fridge gap, as the theory didn't quite translate in practice: on the plans I allowed the minimum of 20mm either side of fridge, but ended up with only about 13mm (was not fun getting the fridge in!). So my suggestion is to make sure there is 50mm either side of fridge. eg the fridge space is 1000mm wide for french door fridge around the 900mm mark. Even so, my doors do open fully (vegie drawers slide out unobstructed), as the doors themselves sit forward of the nib wall on the right. If your fridge space is wider, you won't need to sit the fridge out the full thickness of the doors, which may look more streamlined. But make sure you allow for 50mm space at the back of fridge. This will decide the depth of your nib wall. I calculated mine as 50mm plus the depth of the fridge to the start of the doors. You might prefer to make it a bit deeper, as the doors have more room to open due to the extra width of the space. It isn't annoying having the door opening over the pantry entry. It isn't often that someone wants to get to the pantry at the exact moment someone else opens the fridge. Even if that happened, you could get past if you couldn't wait: Good luck with your renovation! Because you can't be on site, I would always factor in more wiggle room. The whole house has that 80's vibe , and its a good example even today IMO . Anything else has the very real risk it will look added/tacked on .

Personally , I'd just replace with weatherboards , and paint ( or vinyl covered if you are brave enough to risk repeating the current situation ) , probably a lighter shade , maybe with a slight blue tinge as opposed to the present yellow butter tinge -- say a Lexicon half or Surfmist or similar .

If you change the upstairs windows , you will pretty much need to do the downstairs too , otherwise ( yes , we have gone around in a circle haha ) you risk that '2 different styles/eras' look . IF ( and I would be unlikely to do it myself ) you did change upstairs or all the windows , and do new weatherboards or coloursteel or render or whatever , I'd consider changing the window size at the 'upstairs bottom' ( smaller windows , same sides and top lines ) -- maybe its because of the vinyl colour , but I think its more likely the downstairs roof , the whole upstairs looks slightly taller than downstairs , slightly top heavy . Slightly smaller windows will help , but obviously needs added framing and weatherboards , but then you'd have to do the interior , which may turn into 2 whole rooms ?

Apart from that , I'd get rid of the coffee beige around the gutters and boards . A crisp white would look good IMO and tie in with the new offwhite weatherboards , the support poles and boards and gutters will look good and crisp and clean , it even ties in with the brick and window frame tones .

That leaves one thing -- the garage door . Maybe do it the same off-white as your upstairs weatherboards if on a budget or if the door is still fine , but my preference would be a nice timber one -- I do appreciate though that if doing weatherboards or any cladding , there's only so many $$$ .

In summary though , stick to the era and you'll be glad IMO .

I personally would stick with sycon cladding in Linea weather boards. If you are not changing the architectural style of the home, then stick with the horizontal weather boards. In what ever colour you wish.

I personally also think there is nothing wrong with your home style, it just needs a little tweaking and new cladding.

Or even sycon Axon cladding in either horizontal or vertical placement.

I just think colorbond would be the wrong material to use.
