What colour should I paint our house?

Hello everyone,

We are painting our outdated yellow exterior in order to sell but we are stumped on a colour. We are cautious due to the bright terracotta roof. We are trying to stay away from white as homes around our suburb have been painted white with terracotta roofs and we're not too keen on the combination. Our painter has suggested dulux surfmist or another light grey.

(same as the trims and poles) but it turns greyer once painted onto the cladding.

What about these Dulux Tapestry Beige or Dulux Tavern.

Thanks Anne and I will look at pale grey given the maintenance considerations. I have already paid for a colour consultant who was great but the Reckless grey she suggested for the house render and basalt gutters/fascia and front wall were too grey when we had the render samples put on and while it had a modern look, it was not giving the beach/coastal feel. I will head back into our inspirations paint store this morning to see if I can find the warm grey colours that have the most similar colour make up to Dune, and go from there. Anne you don't happen to know the dulux colour most close in composition to Colorbond Dune so I know where to start? Thanks again and I would love to hear from anyone who has got a dune roof and hear if they tried light coloured gutters and what render colours they have used on their walls.

Unless you have the money to update everything else to better complement the bricks, painting them will give you a much more updated look. Over the past 18mths I’ve been working on the front and landscape of my current house, including painting the bricks and it has made the world of difference! I’ve attached a before and after photo! Dear Creatively Challenged , I can recommend Dulux Colour Consultants, I gave up after about 5 sample pots . At the time it cost me $150 and if I used dulux paints I could claim a full refund . That was 12 years ago . I didn’t realise at the time just how good they were , the colours are still in fashion but it’s ready for another paint job for sure. It was such a relief to have someone in who is trained and fully understands colours and fashion and what goes with what . I finally stopped stressing about it and got the job done ✅

Hi Sue, I think the wall colour (white looks like an white/off white) is lovely. It’s neutral and light, and will be the best back drop for any soft furnishings. I would suggest maybe updating some of your furniture. Your sofas look in good condition, so re-upholstering to change the colour may be a expensive option. in a bid to save some money, perhaps updating your rug to a lighter/more neutral pattern/colour (look at armadillo rugs) is a better option. Also updating your dining setting (perhaps something with chair upholstery to compliment the sofa, and even a large light coloured marble top) to be more contemporary and in keeping with your lounge suite would be the way to go. My clients often find it difficult to part with certain pieces that hold sentimental value, but often a new home requires a furniture update. In summary, I’m not convinced changing wall colour will be able to link all your furniture together. Stick with one piece that works well (ie. the sofa) and work towards updating the rest. Good luck!

If it's for sale, I would paint the roof and paving.

We also had a yellow house with terracotta roof.

After seeing a neighbours roof being painted we had our painted woodland grey, and it made a bigger difference than anything else we did. We painted the paving ourselves using Berger paving paints, on the advice of our painter.

I love Surfmist as a colour , but I don't think it plays well with the terracota . like you , I wouldn't keep the buttery yellow , so therefore wouldn't change the roof and paving colours ( no point changing everything ) .

I'd go a light sandy tone , sort of a dark beige . There are 100's to choose , I'd let you choose , but personally I'd keep away from the ones that seemed trendy 15 years ago -- basically start your own trend , instead of updating a 40 year old trend with a 15 year old one , or a 5 year old ( light grey ) one .

And as dreamer says , crisp whiten up the trim -- 'sand' and the 'orange' , with crisp white will look planned and get noticed in a good way .
