Flooring Design Dilemma Living Room

Carpet Colour Conundrum

Hello brains trust,

I am seeking some advice on what colour carpet to choose for our second living area and three bedrooms.

Since moving into our 1950s sandstone fronted house we have been on a mission to de-brown/beige the inside and freshen it up, but have been conscious to keep the colour scheme warm to match certain elements inside and outside of the house and to avoid the wall to wall cool grey you see in a lot of new volume builder homes. So far we have avoided grey, except for some furniture.

We are trying to decide between two carpet colours the beigey Nevada or the grey Morado from EC carpets.

Existing colours are - Dulux Natural White walls and trim, and slightly off white sheers and curtains. Hallway and Kitchen adjacent are Jarrah. I have pasted some colours from online below.

I'm keen on the grey carpet as its a bit brighter and modern but worried it might skew a bit too blue or restrict our options. Basically I like it, but don't want it too look out of place.

We don't have any furniture for the living room yet but aiming for a modern Mid-Century look with warm neutrals - similar modern warm neutrals theme in bedrooms.

Any help appreciated! Need to decide soon.

I prefer the beige one. The one on top in the bottom photo. Don't choose based on fashion, as greys will soon be on the way out. By the way I have an EC carpet in my house - really love it.

I love hardwood spotted gum floors, they add so much warmth to a space. I'm trying to visualise your space, but I'd be inclined to go for a light shade, maybe a light pebble grey to complement your walls, and add texture with a charcoal suite. Good luck!

I agree with Jan -- a lot is personal , and your lifestyles . You say neutral colours , so a wheat type colour for the carpet is a good middle of the road choice , but maybe not practical with kids who like crayons and facepainting and stripping down motorbikes haha . So in that case , maybe a burgundy or mid blue or similar 'solid' colour may suit better ( burgundy may tie in more with the exterior tones ) , but is still sort of neutral , but what about furniture and linen and artwork -- if you have royal blue or fluro green drawers and a brown chair and sunshine yellow duvet/dooner cover , and the room is for someone older than 4 , then burgundy carpet mightn't be the go haha . The existing wall colour works with most things , you can add artwork or posters or sports or academic certificates -- maybe back to front , but I'd sort out everything else ( carpet , furniture , etc ) before deciding on a wall colour , unless sticking to the existing or similar colour .

The answer depends on your look/style. Carpets should be relatively neutral as they are a long lasting fixture. If all rooms are one colour/style then yes match. But if you for example have themed rooms then you might have diff carpet. We have warm honey coloured timber floors and a creamy beige carpet. Family house has med/dark grey with darker timber. Do you want light and bright or dark and moody?

I'd go the lighter beige too -- the one in the second picture . The one on top in the last picture is too dark IMO . If you do want to go a darker shade , I'd do that via rugs , but that brings up another question -- at least some of the floors look to be timber -- did you consider varnishing those floors , then adding rugs instead of fully carpetting those rooms ?

The beige one works better with the warm tones of the jarrah an gives a cohesive look.

The grey doesn’t work with the red floorboards. So I’d vote for beige as well.

Thanks everyone. Still a lot to consider. We will do boards throughout the house one day in the future, probably not bedrooms though. The Jarrah is on top of radiata or cypress pine that is full of inspection hatches so will be a bit soft and rough to polish up. After living with a softwood polished floor I’d be hesitant to do it again.

Looking at these photos I’ve saved for ideas I think we can use the beige. Which actually comes up a warm grey in certain lighting….

Got a bigger roll of the beige (which is looking more and more greige). Carpet place has been quite patient and helpful!

I love the grey, it looks beautiful with the boards and the natural white walls, it’s a big decision, go with what you love, walk out of the room then walk back using the different carpet pieces, your instincts will tell you what looks fabulous to you.

The grey looks a bit stark and mismatched against the Jarrah which is lovely and warm .

andy o - i stumbled across this thread because im in exactly the same position and I think i have those two EC carpet samples next to me as we speak! May i ask which you chose? My problem is that it will be up against existing tiles and a new lounge. Not sure whether the textured loop is too much in my case.
