Corner Pantry?

We are currently renovating the entire house and are up to the kitchen and cabinetry.

We would love some advice on corner pantry ideas. The fridge must go on the far left (of the photos) and the wall at the end of the current bench is structural and has to stay (way over budget to remove).

Has anyone seen or indeed done a corner pantry and how practical are they? Thanks!

Hey Keil, how much space will you have once the refrigerator is installed? And what type of door were you planning, if any? I can see a standard swing door opening being a pain when you’re using the oven / hot plates. And reaching around to the rhs corner could be an issue. Do you have a Hafele showroom near you? Their very innovative designs could be a starting point for you. Also, what is on the other side of the wall? Could you reverse the opening and store your not used every day appliances, cookware, servingware etc just outside the kitchen, freeing up other areas for food storage? I’d be more inclined to install drawers to bench height and cupboards above even if you lose the corner or change it to be accessed from the other side but only you know how you would use the space and what would work, or not work for you. Do let us know what you decided and whether you’re happy once it’s completed. Best

I assume that you are replacing your stove and benches as they are covered in dust ?

You could consider keeping the fridge/oven wall as is. Then moving the stove to under the window so it is closer to the sink which could move behind laundry wall but still extend a little past the laundry wall to line up with the dining room opening (stove side) Change the window to a low bench window type splash back would be preferable to removing it, knock down the bench with brick return next to laundry & have an island bench/breakfast bar say 1200 mm square in front of the fridge/oven, the sink & stove are separate from the island there would be a gap to island on sink side) Then it might be possible to build the pantry in place of the stove or even into door way to dining if you created a new door to dining through living wall. This all depends on your living room layout leading to the dining room & budget of course. The fridge on the entry wall usually works best for families coming & going not getting in the way of the cook. This type of island is going to encroach a little on the meals area if it is 1200 mm square or otherwise make it the same length as the fridge/oven combo width and at least 900 mm deep & 1100 gap between. A good kitchen designer would be worth talking to.

Thanks dreamer, might look into a sliding window for the splashback. And have put the benchtop as 650mm for now, may increase further. Thanks siriuskey. I am leaning towards your design and using the corner as appliance/pantry. The bifold from bench height up would certainly work really well functionally but I’m not sure I’d like the look. I’ve sketched up having the area 800 deep to house the fridge and to have a step in pantry/appliance cupboard (500 deep bench, 300 step in cavity). 2 variations of the cupboard, first with sliding doors opening from centre (approx 1m opening so might feel a bit pokey), or second with perhaps stacker doors to right or bifold (this would block off bench space between pantry and sink when open though). This cupboard would be pretty big (2280mm) so don’t think we’d need the appliance cupboard next to dining area. And could have oven under cooktop. Dining and kitchen could be separated by small wall.

Sink in island is ok, depends on how clean you keep it and how you intend on using the island. Kids do homework at the island isn't ideal with water being splashed about.... Corner pantry is ok but everyone of my clients that has had one in the past say they loose too many items hidden in the far corners.... One of my clients has a pantry same location as your builder has drawn except it goes all the way past the appliance cupboard. It uses a sliding door and have the often used appliances directly in front of you as you slide open door. The lesser used appliance located where your appliance cupboard is now. The remaining space is for food storage. Have a chat with kitchen designer, hers was hesitant at first as they'd never seen this before.... now they have used it on other kitchens......

my suggestion includes assumed measurements but what is the actual length of the wall from the outside of the architraves around the windows into the corners of the room, what's the height above the floor for the windows behind the sink and the fridge and replacing the external door with a slider would mean closing in the small window on that side making an ideal location for the fridge but, instead of adding wider windows on the sink wall and losing so much wall cabinet space i would increase the size of the view by installing a taller window behind the sink matched with taller wall cabinets and unless, you prefer a wall oven, a below counter stove and microwave would open up the space and allow more counter area and i've added extra cabinets in front of the old fridge window (space is unsuitable for anything else except small free standing furniture) .. most of the below counter storage is in drawers making easier pantry storage than a tall narrow cabinet in your limited space i've also included suggestions to improve privacy and convenience for the bathroom and bedroom

Correct, we are redesigning the kitchen. Current stove, bench and island etc will be replaced.

Love a corner pantry as long as shelves are cut back and you can walk into it (no step, continue floor in). When we renovated 20 years ago now we created a corner against the fridge as my husband really wanted one. Works for us. They are a little out of fashion.

What are the measurements of the space?
How wide is the allowance you need for your fridge?

My suggestion would look at doing a rectangle pantry, not a corner pantry. Depending on measurements. Have your space for the fridge then a rectangle area for your pantry. Installing a cavity sliding door. The existing wall that has been built will need re building to form cavity. I just think it would be better for that space.

Jan and dreamers ideas would both work, both depend on dimensions. Bunnings/Kaboodle kitchens do a rectangle corner pantry which has a hinged door, which would be next to the fridge and hinged on the right they are 600 deep and approx 1200 long from memory.
