Well, I did a trial with a few tiles and then covered them with polyurethane. The trial didn't necessarily go entirely to plan but I was able to establish that PU will be too soft. Epoxy is likely to yellow even indoors, so that leaves me with the following solution: 1. make the tiles thicker (not a big deal) use tile selection and a thicker tile bed to enable a relatively flat surface to be made 3. seal it with a thin polyurethane to protect from mess Thanks for the contributions.

I have had a similar problem having chosen and purchased travertine tiles for the bathrooms and kitchen and then we we decided to tile the rest of the living area and couldn't match the tile we already had, I was in a huge dilemma. Fortunately I found a plain tile in the same tone which should give my living area a different and moden look so my suggestion is to do as I did, and find a plain tile that matches the same tone as your existing tiles and you should be pleasantly surprised. What a beautiful kitchen! Colour really depends in the style you are looking for...I have a similar space to you and I went with this light blue/aqua tile....I love it and the first thing most people comment on is how calming it is....I wanted a casual calm beachy feel to my home and it worked perfectly for me! Another option I saw at a friend's recently was a soft ?dove grey glass subway tile (similar to the 2nd photo) in a herringbone pattern...it looked amazing with all white cabinetry.... neutral but if you love bright red option then accessories in red such as toaster kettle etc would really pop...and that way if you tire if red u can change accessories cheaper than a splashback/wall.

Sarah Sarah is right. You won't find a perfect match unless you find new old stock for sale on ebay or gumtree - but you have to be lottery lucky. Try moving tiles from under the fridge, or under the dishwasher, or under the bottom shelf of the pantry. However you will probably break about half of them in the removal process. Don't even bother to try and trim different tiles like annb1997 has suggested as there are too many variables with thickness, finish, texture, colour and gloss level. A mismatched tile will be obvious every time you walk into the kitchen and be a permanent annoyance. Best of luck, Dr Retro of Dr Retro House Calls
