Staircase surface... the link between old and new

Morgan Treacle

We're raising our cottage and are thinking about the stairs... the top floor has our existing original polished wood floor boards (pic below).

The new bottom floor will have polished concrete/epoxy flooring (light grey).

I'm trying to figure out what surface to put on our staircase which will link the two areas. Carpet is an option and will help to reduce the noise of the kids running up and down but it's not my ideal choice.

Floating wood floorboards is another option but what colour to tie in the the top floor?

Any other options?

This picture is the colour of our top floor boards against the white skirts and walls. Both sides of the staircase will be white walls so also need to think about a nice rail (thinking black to tie in with black aluminium windows). Thanks for any advice!!

We're also looking for a local Brisbane (QLD) company to build the staircase for us.
