Bricks are different to sample, do I have a case to take it further?

Hi everyone,

We are currently building, and in the gallery we selected Austral Brick colour "Fawn". Which was a brown/beige colour. When it was installed it looked very different and they told me to wait till it's cleaned. Now that it has been cleaned, it looks completely orange. I queried it with them and they said it's within variation but I know they also say this just to cover themselves. I also sent photos to the manufacturer and they identified it as "Access Cream" which really says it's not within variation.

It's past the point of being able to change the brick, but I'm sure something else like staining could be done.

To me the photos of the bricks you chose in the gallery, look the same as what has been used. The first photo of the fawn brick does not look the same colour as the bricks chosen in the gallery.

I wouldn’t stain it. It’s not a common technique in Australia and results are likely to be variable. I’d let the builder know in writing that the wrong brick has been installed as per the brick manufacturers identification and that you’d like the correct brick to be used. This will give you a base to negotiate a discount from.

HU - I really think you should start a new thread on this issue as, many people may not see this when it is an old thread. I've had different colours of the exact same carpet in a house, but there were rooms in between so it was never obvious, but two different carpets together is another thing again. How did you feel the green looked with the off white?? If you were happy with the two colours together, then you could put any colour you liked with it, otherwise maybe remove the carpet from the stairs, although that can then make the stairs very noisy. What is the condition of the off white carpet - do you feel it may need replacing soon so you could match whatever you do now, if it is a carpet that does not look like being discontinued in the near future. You may even be able to match the off white that is there. Another hassle with using two different carpets is the weave and texture can make them look more odd together than different colours. It is really hard to advise you on this, you really need to see the two carpets together, at least it is easy to bring home carpet samples to see just what you can live with. Good luck.

I really feel for you. I had a similar experience when a neighbour recommended someone she knew who was 'really good'! He was extremely lazy and, apparently, suffering from depression and he had split up with his girlfriend! He did a dreadful job which took a week - because he was too depressed to work on some days - he only did about half the job and I wasn't impressed. It has ruined my relationship with my neighbour because she knew him to be really good. She won't even come into my place - I assume she doesn't want to see the mess he created! To top it all off (I had paid him cash - fortunately only half of what he 'wanted' (not 'earned') so he wouldn't be paying tax on it )- I didn't get a receipt. He also took my house keys so I had to have the locks replaced. Such a mess and then, I had some tradies through a couple of weeks later for an unrelated job and they asked me when I was getting the place painted? When I told them it had just been done, they really didn't know where to look. I seem to constantly get ripped off, so I'm not getting much done any more - too expensive and depressing.

I love the drama of the brick wall and it is a major design feature of the house... however, there is a LOT of exposed brick with the fireplace surround also being exposed and you have mentioned you dont like the colour. Have you thought about covering up the other walls rather than this one, to tone down the brick work? I just wonder if you hate the amount of brick and you are taking it out on this wall because that's where it is concentrated while overlooking the rest of the house? Just food for thought... more food for thought. BTW I love the idea of hanging plants (though watering them might be a pain), I love the idea of a dramatic feature pendant and I also love the idea of the rug, all will soften or harmonise the drama. www.billyhoostudio.com

Thank you both for the wonderful suggestions. me me, would you suggest a different colour for the door? I have to keep in green but could do a different shade. macyjean I love your feedback, particularly regarding some cascading plants over the cream wall. I am working on a sketch, but in the mean time added some more pics. You are right about the rcac, I have been wanting to screen it but the installers told me not to put anything in front. Perhaps a shrub might work?

They have sent a rep out who stated its "Access Fawn" and have just said it's the variation of colour of bricks. But their own reps also identified it as another as "Access Cream". Had they mentioned at the gallery that it could turn out orange, I would not have chosen it. Quite disappointed with the outcome, I really don't like orange.

Sorry, nothing to do with brick colour. Could someone please tell me why the bricks have the break in their construction with half bricks then start again with another half brick. I live in WA and 95% of our homes are double brick construction not brick veneer. I have never seen this line in a building wall before. Could anyone enlighten myself as to why this is done. Is it due to shifting ground, and if one wall cracks it will stop at the break in the wall. It looks like two independent walls.

Froedo can you get sample brick from supplier & test against house in same lighting? I would send supplier a letter stating your concerns & get in writing their response to cover yourself in case of est any mistakes. I’m not a builder but if you need to change colour you would probably need to bag or render. All the best with resolving.
