Contemporary Splash Back Ideas - No Tiles

last year

looking for ideas on style and materials for a splash back that is not tile - looks like tiles are really on at the moment and glass is out lol. With experience, grout in the tiles does not stay clean very long and discolours, especially in a cooking area, so I was wondering if there are any ideas on this. Although I like the stone vein style, I was thinking something that may not date as quickly ....

I was never a fan of glass so am glad it’s moving out a bit. You could Continue your benchtop material as the splashback. You can also get some quite good sealers for grout these days.

Polished copper, sealed concrete, marble, porcelain are all beautiful, but as bigreader says the grout these days are so much better

Hello! A mirror splashback looks great and would definitely bounce light around and reflect the view out the window - but you are right that they can be particularly hard to clean behind an oven. I'm speaking from personal experience and also from when we have installed mirrors in clients homes. Have you thought about subway tiles? These will keep the space bright, are relatively inexpensive and timeless - which will help with resale down the track. I've attached an example from a recent project I've completed. Hi Hu, I love the window in your kitchen, if you go white subway tiles a stack pattern would add a contemporary look and white grout would give a clean and stylish look and blend beautifully with any decor items you add.

Dark grout is great and lots of tiles needs little grout. Some materials can’t be used behind a stove. But there are lots of options like porcelain slabs

Using the same material as the bench top gives a seamless look. In our recent Reno we went from a glass splash back to caesar-stone the same as the bench top. Just as easy to clean as the glass. It looks beautiful especially with led lights under the overhead cupboards to create a feature wash of light down the stone. We also used the same material on the ledge in the adjoining dining - just a small change but it really ties the two spaces together in a subtle way.
