100% Retro, and it ultimately depends on the design/vanity/basin set-up. Wall mounted advised if counter top like image above, however bench mixers can fine with inset or under counter basin set-ups. If you want to minimise risks just makes sure it's done well and corners are not cut - I wouldn't be worried about this and if it's good quality not a reason "not to do it. No different to having a shower mixer in the wall - if it goes wrong yes you'll have an expensive repair but this rarely happens with the good gear - hence avoid false economy and invest in the right areas to minimising project risk ;) PD

Your choice should be determined by how high the bowl is above the vanity to ensure adequate clearance between the outlet and the bowl so you can wash your hands. Is the bowl recessed into the vanity or sitting on top of the vanity bench? Always think of the practicalities before aesthetics as no matter how beautiful it is, if it is mismatched, too high, or too low for your vanity basin you will hate it. Would you consider two mixers, a lower one for the bath and a higher one for the shower so there is no confusion for visitors? Safety and ease of operation should be the highest priority when looking at mixers for shower/bath combinations. If you only want to have one mixer then make the height suitable for somebody having a shower. You don't want to be bending over to adjust the temperature when showering in a shower\bath. I usually design bath mixers and spouts centered on the wall of the long side of the bath so if you need extra hot water when you are having a long soak it is easy to reach. I have never heard of the requirement for a bath mixer to be at 700mm, although this could be a good height for a bath spout depending on the depth of your bath.
