Help — they dyed my exterior bricks red!
Comments (22)i love this home. stunning but if you want to detract from the red i would add something on the stairs like sandstone or paint in white as then the stairs are an amazing feature that the eye will zone in on rather than simply zoning in on the red. Design is thinking outside the box. Ask yourself why you hate it and then think of some reasons to change and it may be that you feel it is just to bold and a solution would be to give another focal area...See MoreRed Brick Exterior - SOS...Exterior Colours HELP!!
Comments (22)so relieved you don't want to spoil a great looking brick home with more render but is there a view from upstairs? when funds allow extending the deck/verandah across the front of the garage would add extra upstairs outdoor space and modify the look of the garage doors and consider painting garage doors and rendered wall in the darkest cement colour (greenish) grey with white eaves and fascias with black gutters and simply pressure wash the driveway to retain the natural concrete colour and add climbing plants to fall down the side of the retaining wall...See MoreWhich exterior paint colours for a 1927 brick bungalow?
Comments (11)Hi Pottsy99, thanks so much for your thoughtful response! You are perfectly right about that infill panel and the original steps which had been removed - goodness knows what was going through people's heads to do this to an old house. I do intend to reinstate the stairs - and link to the front garden which is north-east facing so will be perfect for an informal edible garden. I'm thinking of finding some original encaustic tiles to do the porch floor. It's a good idea to reinstate the steps in concrete - I was thinking about timber on a steel frame (for costs) however concrete will give a more stable feeling . This old California Bungalow however has an perplexing design in that there appear to be two entrances - apparently this was not that unusual for California Bunglalows. The main hallway runs off the side entrance, whereas these steps which come from the front garden lead straight into the loungeroom, with no hallway. So I intend to keep the main entrance to the side, and make the front entrance relate directly to the front garden, using plants and lighting to direct people to the main entrance. anyhow, in regards to the colour pallette, I love your idea of a burgundy roof, however I'm going to tone it down a bit as there's a lean-to at the back where I can have some fun with colour. For street appeal I'm going to keep it toned down - the setting is an Australian bush garden, and I'm looking at a relaxing pallette of greys which I think will make the red bricks sing as well. I've had the red bricks and mortar colour-matched at the hardware store, and there are red/yellow/black tones in them. So the greys will be warm/ olive-greenish. The light colour will be a lighter hue of the mortar (very light beige). The front door will be bright red, with warm white/very light beige trim. thanks again for your thoughts :-)...See MoreCalifornian Bungalow Exterior Colour Scheme - thoughts?
Comments (7)You have a fantastic period home and the colours you have selected are following contemporary fashion trends. However your terracotta tiled roof and chimneys are very orange, and the greys you have selected will make them see even more orange. I would be looking to the grey/greens to counterbalance the strength of the terracotta. Just remember that the fashionable greys of today are the daggy mission browns of tomorrow, especially when used on a period home like yours. This is why the current colour scheme looks so bad - as it is not original and was probably done in the 1980's. Have a look at this Haymes paint resource if you want some refreshing inspiration that is beyond today's generic greys: https://www.haymespaint.com.au/explore-colours/heritage-authentic-colours/identifying-period-styles/ Best of luck with your considerations, Dr Retro of Dr Retro House Calls...See MoreKate C
