I think they would like to but they’ve been told it would be pretty expensive to do it. At this stage they will probably keep it as it is.

You could add a mobile bench. This will help with creating bench space closer. Hard without seeing a bigger floor plan showing where the doors connect to to get and idea of flow.

If the rumpus room is an add-on the wall with the servery window is probably an original external wall and that’s why it’s costly to open up.

A rough floor plan, the random room in the middle, off of the kitchen is a random thoroughfare room filled with a wall of all the old family portraits…

And yes the wall through the servery is the old farmhouse wall, it’s over a foot thick and would be fairly pricey to remove.

I would say the current layout of kitchen is the best layout. This give lots of room for the family dining table in the middle. I would leave layout as is and install all new appliances and cabinets. Current layout with brand new drawers and cabinets and all appliances will be fantastic. The new cabinets will be deeper (600mm) than the 1970,s cabinets, I would assume. And the sink would be deeper and wider. A new oven, maybe a wall oven, which is easier to reach than a floor oven. (Keeping in mind the current height of the old oven.) Have the microwave installed into cabinetry at bench height. Keep the little paperwork nook with stool in the corner. Maybe even a dishwasher installed near sink. Very exciting for your family.

Sounds like a lovely old house. Is there any functionality issues your parents would like to resolve or is it just looks?

Mums a big baker so she loves lots of bench space, I think she’d love an island bench but it just doesn’t work with a closed kitchen when you still need some dining seats. We did talk about an island bench as your main seating but I think Mum was worried if that would be practical as they get older…

Could you consider an island for your mum that was made as freestanding with lockable castor feet? Mine has lockable castors and works well. It could be big enough to have seating with comfortable stools with arms. Then a separate dining table in the rumpus that is big enough to hold the family when needed. When Mum gets a bit older the island can be wheeled into the rumpus and used for craft and a smaller dining table be added back into the kitchen. OR has removing part of the wall into the old dining been investigated?

If you remove wall to entry hall you can open up the Soave. I built a new Wall for privacy to bathroom. Where is bed 1?

If you can relocate the fridge to where the paperwork nook is, and therefore keep one wall completely free, a L shaped island with seating as per this photo might be worth considering.
