Decisions Pantry or Wall Oven

last year

I have room in my new kitchen design for either a wall oven and microwave next to my fridge on back wall, and minimal slide out pantry of approx 250mm OR 600mm pantry with pull out drawers and therefore under bench microwave and oven. My kitchen is u-shaped.

Both have advantages. What do folk suggest?

I spent ages figuring out the lay out of our kitchen and am really happy with the result (four months in). We put the sink on the back wall, under a window and love looking out. Make sure there is a bin drawer next to the sink. Ours goes bin, sink, dishwasher, drawers, stove, drawers, oven stack. I think the passages in your kitchen area are a bit narrow. We have 1300mm between the benchtop edges. People can then pass each other easily and it doesn't matter if the drawers or dishwasher is open. The island then has drawers holding the plates and cutlery. You can unload the dishwasher straight into the opposite drawers which the kids love. You have two lots of corner cupboards in the pantry and might be better off with one straight line as I don't believe you gain much more and it will feel more spacious. Consider leaving a space on the kitchen side of the island so you can sit too. I hate standing while entertaining and everyone else is sitting at the island! Hope that helps.

Hi I am really interested in this discussion for similar reasons. Currently our plans squeeze in a pantry under the stairs so 1.5 m X 1 m. Builder suggests we shrink ensuite from 3350 x 1650 to 2350 x1650 long so it becomes a proper walk in pantry 2m x1.5 m. I was concerned I will end up with two nonfunctional spaces. But it sounds like the pantry will work. What are everyone's opinion on a master ensuite size. It means I'll have a single basin vanity only 500 m wide

1x 60cm Oven or 2x 45cm Ovens?

I think only having 45cm ovens is too restrictive. What about 1 x 60cm oven and 1 x 45cm oven if you have room? Stacked. That is much more flexible than a single 60cm oven or 2x 45cm ovens. You can cook a main meal such as a roast with 2 or 3 trays in one and dessert in the other at the same time. Or use the smaller oven for just a cake or one tray meal and save on electricity. Or if catering for a crowd you’ve got lots of oven space. I’d definitely go with pyrolytic oven. I’m a big fan. And stacked rather than under bench. Much more ergonomic/better for your back.

Seriously? Lack of understanding of the authentic original period architecture. This is neither fish nor fowl and so overcooked. Less is more people. The best results in renovations/refit scenarios are always those that are inherently sympathetic, taking cues from the existing space or original style, and tying in. It can be successful taken either in a contemporary direction or restoring accurately, BUT regardless of what it is it needs to be BALANCED, rather than the mess like here which is a case of arbitrarily applying an excess of random foreign design and style elements. People (including interior pros) need to stop trying to be "on trend" for the sake of it or thinking we must have "features' or 'hero' elements. Sometimes the best and most clever architectural results are those that promote LESS attention to it......but enduring and classic outcomes requires subtlety and capacity to confidently filter stylistic choices without being influenced by the noise of the latest interiors magazine or Pinterest post.

Definitely under bench oven and microwave will give a much sleeker look - no microwave is ever going to be a great feature piece.

Can you post a plan of the room and the proposed kitchen, because I am one who prefers a wall oven and the Microwave above bench, also think that for your planned U shape it works better.

Having back issues and previous spinal surgeries in my 30s I will never live with a low oven or microwave again, although I think the look is nicer, longevity of use is a primary concern for me, I would also prefer a slide out pantry because reaching low and in has been impossible for me before. So it depends on Health and the future use of the house.

I also prefer microwave above the bench. I have mine integrated into cupboards. Looks good in my opinion. You can have more pantry storage below and above microwave as per this photo. I would of liked a wall oven, but it did not work with my kitchen layout.

I know I said underbench oven earlier, I forgot to add above bench for microwave as it doesn’t generally have pull out trays

" Form over Function", always go for Function which if done correctly looks good
