How do you vent a Colorbond roof?

I have been looking for alternatives to soffit vents in Australia but I haven't been able to find anything else. Are over fascia vents not used here?

My builder has suggested that a single flume vent installed near the ridge would provide adequate ventilation when used with a couple soffit vents. For a house with a 22-degree hip roof and a rectangular footprint of 10 by 7.8 metres I would have thought at least two whirlybirds would be necessary.

If you want a definite answer you can Google the specifications for whirlybirds (of which there are also alternative brands) and they’ll tell you how much air they’ll remove per minute etc.

Thank you for your reply bigreader. I did contact a couple of whirlybird companies and they did confirm 2 to 3 wind-driven whirlybirds are suitable for a roof of that size. I will use those instead of a single flume vent for the outlets but what about the inlets?

Soffit vents require several holes to be cut into the soffit for adequate ventilation and can let insects into the roof cavity. Over fascia vents don't but it seems that they are not yet available in Australia. Does anyone use anything other than soffit vents?

we have a red roof now but when we replace it ,it will be zinc much better in summer and want fade we are going to paint walls colour bond cream with a trim of sage green on the bottom of windows good luck sally.

Thanks girlguides for your feedback :-) With my limited colour knowledge (LOL) I thought that Windspray looked OK with Basalt - Windspray is definitely a cooler grey but Basalt seems pretty much neutral (i.e. not warm or cool) so I thought it worked when we went to look at samples... You are definitely right though, it is a pretty subtle colour scheme. I think I'm pretty much decided now that the gutters and fascia should be the same colour - so with your suggestion they'd both be surfmist. With your colour scheme, what would you suggest for the balustrades and balustrade/deck posts? I thought a darker colour for them would be best since I want them to recede into the view when sitting on the deck/looking outside.

I recently completed my owner built house and shed. My shed has shale grey roof and walls and is very cool all year round in The Atherton Tablelands near Cairns. My neighbor used monument and has a very hot shed. My house has a shale grey roof and the walls are cement block painted with shale grey(Taubmans). The garage door and is surfmist which looks white. The window and door frames are white. I love the look and what ceiling space I have does not get overly hot. The shale grey roof appears lighter than the walls because of the reflected light. This gives a nice contrast. Another neighbor has a surmist roof which can be too glarey to look at. Bear in mind that monument being dark will also show more noticeable fading than shale grey.
