There's 2 options -- measure the longest vehicle you have or are likely to own , add on for walking around , add the shelves , open the vehicle doors ( you only need 1 vehicle at a time with open doors , but you don't want all those 'supermarket' dings so make sure they aren't likely to bang into each other ) . Likewise , do you need access for bikes , motorbikes , lawnmowers ?
The other way would be google haha -, which says at least 5.5metres by 5.6metres .
A standard garage should be 6m x 6m. This allows room for all types of vehicles, unless you own a F250 or a chev Silverado. It allows for doors to be opened and access completely around vehicles, and room for storage if required. We have a 7.5m x 6m garage. We have a pull out clothes line, a spare fridge when required for gatherings, storage, and Ford Ranger which is 5700mm long. So in answer to your question, a garage should be as big as you require it to be, and as big as the building block allows.
Assuming that adding extra space won't break the budget I'd make that space as LARGE as possible, for the Most Underrated aspect of house design - Extra Storage Space!!
A standard Toyota Land Cruiser is 5000mm in length, then add a tow bar, a bull bar, you will need 6000mm to close the garage door. As pottsy said, measure the biggest vehicle that will be garaged, plus storage etc etc.
A large 4WD could be 5400. So allowing for storage try 6500. Standard double is 5500 w x 6000. This assumes one small and one large sedan plus some storage. You may want some extra width or wider door opening depending on your access and needs
Thanks all for the replies. We're limited lengthways to 6.2m which seems ok for some storage space, say 400mm wide shelves. Width wise we're bumping it out to 7m for bike storage
we're happy with our 6m deep x 8m wide garage with drive through and generous storage on both sides but extra depth would be better for a bigger car and our garage doors are offsett not centred to allow for a deeper workspace on one side and 60cm deep shelves on the other side
