1950s Maisonette Renovation Ideas

We've been living in our small 3 bed 1 bath maisonette for two years and it's time to renovate. Our main priority is a new bathroom, more living space and a larger master bedroom. The kitchen is small but workable and fairly modern compared to the rest of the house. Our budget is $100,000 but we're not sure where to prioritise the funds. We would be interested to hear how others have renovated the 1950s maisonettes around Adelaide. In our area most are being knocked down. Below is the current floorplan.

Why are you calling this a maisonette? It seems by the plan it is a stand alone home. A maisonette I find is usually a small flat attached to a larger building. Is your home attached to another building?

I completely love the twirly bits, and the window trim. It's unique, special and shows the family within has a sort of fun spirit. If you would be more comfortable with a cottage that looks more "regular", then take it off. But please don't! For some color and inspiration, google French provencal fabric images. I can completely see a little black metal bistro table and wood slat back chairs on your porch with a cloth of one of those fabrics. I would paint it a light dusky blue, with white trim and mid-charcoal accents around the windows and the corner pieces on the front porch. Although the yellow with the blue would be quite right too! The front walk looks to be in good condition. You can do a stone overlay on that, letting a small portion of the stones hang over the straight edge, to give it a little more rustic look. It looks like you have a good collection of Queen of the Nile lilies (guessing here). Were they blue on blooming? You can create some slightly larger and curving beds in the front, and transplant some within it. I would add lavender and rosemary in a mix with those. For some grey and texture, put some lambs ears (a perennial) along the outside edge. Check your local growing zone to see what will thrive in your area! Lucky you. What a find!

Well, it has been a long (and sometimes painful) process but we are nearly at the end of the extension/renovation. We ended up going with a building designer (Dalecki Design) who made a few changes we really hadn't considered (including moving the existing bathroom) which may have cost slightly more but completely changed and improved the master bedroom space. Without the pool it will be close to the upper end of our original budget but still within what we were hoping for so fairly happy with that. Overall the new living area is amazing and filled with light compared to the old design. Will throw in some photo updates once we have finally converted the front yard from a sand pit and finished off the driveway, garage door and fencing.

Belinda, If I recall previously you said your partner wants to keep the fireplace. Personally I’d remove it or render it, I’m not fond of the style. And I’m not keen on a fireplace that doesn’t work. I know some would say keep it as it is part of the history of the house. I live in a 50s house I bought off the original owners who had had an architect help with either design. When we got the house it had one roughly brick shaped stone fireplace and in the formal lounge a marble clad fireplace. Very different.and obviously the formal fireplace had changed with the times. There is no shame in that. If you like the style embrace it and work with it, otherwise change it to what you like to look at and will make you happy.

This plan is just out half, our neighbours house is attached along the lounge/kitchen wall.

Saw one of these where they had combined beds 2&3 into a master and accessed the bathroom as an ensuite and created a 2nd small bathroom in the existing laundry space. It turned into a 2 bed 2 bath place using the existing footprint. Can’t remember where they arranged the washing machine

how many bedrooms and living areas do you need and do you want the new rooms within existing house or are you expecting to build an extension and do you need/want drive through access to the backyard and where is north and what is the verandah built out of?

We're happy with 3 bedrooms, but at least one of them larger, two living spaces. Expecting to build an extension either to the rear or side. Back of the house is north. We don't need drive through access, the shed is currently a rumpus room. Verandah is partly tin sheeting and partly shade cloth, it's ready to come down anyway.

my suggestion would be to use the existing kitchen for a generous bathroom, old toilet for a new laundry and old bathroom plus bed 3 to create an enlarged master with biw with an extension for a new kitchen and family room and reconsider use of the carport
