Kitchen decor ideas

Need some inspiration for adding character to an orherwise functional but plain kitchen. Thinking of adding a plant on the benchtop to the left of the large picture windiow which faces north and gets lots of light.. Compact plant or something taller? What colour pot? Also some sort of decor on the island bench? l’m hopeless wirh decorating but l can cook!

Hi Kate, consider choosing useful items for your decor. A ceramic vessel for your utensils, a pretty tray for your nicely packaged condiments, a pretty container for your hand wash, a nice holder for your cookbooks or cutting boards. I’m a bit of a minimalist, like to keep my benches pretty clear, so I don’t think you need much but choose things of different heights and textures, and one or two things with a pattern, with everything else in shades of your chosen colour. Because of the neutral colour of your kitchen, just about any colour will work, so select a colour that you like and complements the other rooms. To give some depth, you might consider hanging your plant from the ceiling, and if you have wall space, maybe a clock or art piece? Add items slowly, and be prepared to remove items if you find they don’t work for you. The other thing I’d consider is your window treatment, it’s a great place to add some colour, so maybe a second layer as your blind looks new. Hope that helps but either way, I’m sure it’ll be lovely as you’ve got great taste

Wise comments Jan - I'm a minimalist too! Yes making considered purchases and taking time is the way to go I believe. Like the idea of a ceramic utensil holder and a pretty container for handwash. Also shades of the chosen colour sounds great plus a bit of texture and pattern. I had been thinking of a clock but my husband says we have clocks on both ovens - but my eyesight is not what it used to be plus their the 24 hour variety! We have a large artwork on the opposite wall. Yes the blind is relatively new as this is a new build home (we did an owner build - nearly killed me!). There is a one screen blind and also a block out blind behind that for the warmer summer weather. Thanks again taking the time to provide your feedback - greatly appreicated..

OK, I have lots of ideas with that brief; Starting with the floor, I think a big cosy knitted/plaited style rug like this one would set the tone. From there I think a round coffee table (maybe in a dark timber not unlike your kitchen to keep the colour story working between the spaces) to help with the movement of people within the space and finally I would repeat a modular sofa to maintain the number of seats you require. I'd consider the sofa in a donkey brown (grey/brown). I would replace the side table with a round side table that is in a new material (metal or ceramic) but same sort of colours to layer up the textures. Cushions on the sofa should then be various textures but continuing the same colours. The entertainment unit I would then select something that is textural like this. I would have a big piece of timber artwork or installation over the sofa something like these . Have fun with the space. Sophie

What a beautiful kitchen! Colour really depends in the style you are looking for...I have a similar space to you and I went with this light blue/aqua tile....I love it and the first thing most people comment on is how calming it is....I wanted a casual calm beachy feel to my home and it worked perfectly for me! Another option I saw at a friend's recently was a soft ?dove grey glass subway tile (similar to the 2nd photo) in a herringbone pattern...it looked amazing with all white cabinetry.... neutral but if you love bright red option then accessories in red such as toaster kettle etc would really pop...and that way if you tire if red u can change accessories cheaper than a splashback/wall.

Hi Marie, I'm not a pro, but I had a similar dilemma a few months ago when I was renovating my home & garden. Wasn't sure which style I want exactly, but wanted it to look modern and sleek but not to be expensive. Pinterest helped me a lot with creating mood boards with selections of plants, colours, other interesting elements. When I planed it all out, I started a hunt for the plants, furniture and stone tiles. That's where the complications started. I couldn't find anything that will match my vision, something was always missing. Then I decided to call the pros. I called the local company for landscaping in North Shore that helped me plan my backyard in no time, for a price that is I would say, more than reasonable. I recommend you to ask pros for tips, at least a consultation. They are well informed where any type of the material can be found as well. Good luck!

The right coffee table, throw and wall art are not going to be enough to disguise the fact that you have downsized from a much larger home with your large, dark, formal furniture that dominates a compact room. Have you considered moving pieces to other rooms, or selling it, and buying clean-lined, contemporary style furniture off eBay? This style will fit the proportions of your room, and make it easier to live with your dust free strategy. The beauty of second-hand furniture is that when you can afford to upgrade you can sell it again on eBay. and recover your costs. Never paint perfectly good pieces of timber furniture as it will devalue the pieces. Sell them as is, somebody will cherish them as they are. I would keep the couch, decide on the tone of your new timber floor, and use these two elements to decide on the rest of your colour scheme. Your celing fan/light is also a distraction, so replace with something sleek and contemporary that is not such a feature. Your room layout is problemmatic with the number of doors coming into the room, but it is hard to suggest a better stategy without a floorplan. What a beautiful kitchen, I too am a minimalist, I love to let the beautiful craftsmanship shine through, I would add a touch of black in accessories for a beautiful look, don’t overcrowd the bench tops, choose beautiful pieces that will highlight your lovely kitchen.

Thanka Julie - you’ve helped me so much with most rooms in my new home and provided wonderful advice. Seems we have similar taste. Like the idea of adding some black accent. It will be great when the outside viburnum hedge reaches fence height so we will have a nice garden outlook. 😀
