New sofa to our living room

Our living room is quite small. What kind of seating would be best: 3 seater sofa with 2 chairs, corner sofa or 2-3seater with chaise? We have been thinking about grey colour in sofa as we have a dog, but open for any other colour recommendations. Ignore the carpet colour as it will be replaced with parquet flooring. The chair in the living room is going to our new bedroom. I would be very grateful for all advice.

Comments (8)Have you just moved in? I would consider living with what you have for the time being. It looks like your colour palette is black, brown, grey, beige and a dusky pink and that you like tribal-esque designs? If that's correct, then I would probably use that as a basis for decorating the room. "Tribal" is on trend at the moment, so you should be able to find inspiration in most home ware stores. If you want a rug, think about how often it will be used, as that will guide you towards colour and pattern. For example, if it's going to be walked on all day long, then you may want something which doesn't show "tracking" and which has a pattern to hide any possible future stains. The rug should be huge - big enough to fit under the front of the corner sofa and stretch out beyond the coffee table. I'm presuming a TV will go on the TV stand, so to off-set the TV, I'd try to put a large piece of art behind the two occasional chairs given that you have large windows on all of the other walls....See MoreHELP! Comments (25)First ,is removing excess furniture an option? Second, why bar fridge in the dining area, that really ruins the look. Seems that you can not move dining table closer to the kitchen because you have light pendant above the table, so can you move piano where your black couch is and couch on the other side of the room instead of creamy colour sofa . I notice the luck of coffee tables and side tables,that's probably why you like to sit around dining table, it is not visitors friendly and doesn't encourage conversation or interaction. Comments (29)I probably wouldn't go for completely white walls. A cream or ecru goes better with dark brown. I'd probably head in the direction of natural tones - get several and in different textures. They can look lush and designery. You could also consider a darker wall, say behind the couch, maybe in light yellow ochre. Comments (7)Some dimensions will help. Do you want a tv in the space? How many seats? A partition shelving unit or console backing onto a couch would create a sense of hallway at front door. Definitely need a large rug in living space to define the area and create warmth....See More

10 years agoThank you so much for all the comments. That just confirms I can go on with my original plan with the 3 seater sofa and two chairs. Before moving to this house we used to live in a much bigger house, so at the moment we have just put the furnitures where we can until the extension is ready. I found two nice chairs for the living room but having them together with grey or black sofa would probaply look too dark. I really like the yellow sofa too, but i'm afraid that we would get tired of it. The sofa table is going to the family room when its ready. Also the cabinet in the corner is the only piece of furniture in cherry colour, so I'm planning to get rid of it. And what do you think if I paint the lamp table black?

10 years agolast modified: 10 years agoI've been enormously pleased by the huge number of inspiration photos of all styles on this site, as well as the core group of design professionals that are ready to add their expertise to the mix.
I'm only an amateur decorator, so you have my permission to take my advice with a healthy dose of salt.
One minus to a 3-seat sofa, in my experience, is that no one seems to want to sit in the middle seat. It gives room between the two people who sit on the ends, but no one likes the middle (probably because there are no arms to lean on)!
OK 13.8 feet by 13 feet.
My searches on the main Houzz page were "small living room australia" and "small lounge australia"
The first picture is not small by any means (and it's in Chicago), but it shows two different seating arrangements in the same room -- including a 2-seat sofa and two chairs near the fireplace in a room that's very long and narrow

This is a 4 chair plus coffee table arrangement...and it looks as if the entire arrangement fits on an area rug that is the same/similar size as your room.
