The door looks fine and suits the space. I’m unsure what problem, either functionality or appearances, that you’re trying to solve?

I think the door is the best part, lovely wood colour and great light coming into hall from sidelights. I would add height to the items on your console and add a jute floor runner to cover the tiles. Do you use the mirror above console, I think artwork would look better.

Hi Julie Wright, what is it about your door that you don’t like? On my screen it appears quite dark and your internal timbers, a little lighter. If that difference bothers you, perhaps sanding back and refinishing in a lighter tone might be an option. Or is it you want to add a pop of colour? In that case, a rich blue or bottle green would look nice. Although white, with charcoal accents, gives you an almost unlimited palette. A purple undertoned taupe, could look great too. Or could it be the style of door is just not to your taste, or you feel it really needs an extra large brushed steel door handle, and that it is timber isn’t the issue at all? Once you pin down what is bothering you, you’ll be halfway to your solution. If you do decide to paint, take a few colour accurate photos to a specialist paint shop and get an opinion from their colour consultant (usually a nominal fee or a credit toward the paint). I love your door, but this is your home, so if you decide you’d like a mural of Bluey or a vinyl wrap of the southern cross, and your not planning to sell in the immediate future, you go for it

I think you need to leave door as is perhaps replace the screen door with say crimsafe. Inside need hall runner and a taller plant, groupings no individual. It looks lonely on the table.

Firstly to "Big Reader" I was not completely happy with the hallway, and given I am not all that great at decorating, thought perhaps the front door area needed updating!

To "Julie Herbert" thank you for the photos, think you are spot on, so will endeavour to redecorate the hall table - now to be on the hunt for something lovely as per your photos.

"Dreamer" - great idea re runner - would lift the area, assume I would need something under the runner to hold it down on tiles. Any ideas for artwork as in colour width etc.? Am not good at artwork either :-)

I am loving Hanna Peterson, Sofia Lind artwork, I have quite a few, you can buy the print from redbubble for a very good price, then grab a large frame from Kmart and voila , but of course you can choose original artwork from artists if you prefer.

There are some fabulous ideas here for balancing the timber of the door with styling and these will certainly make a huge difference to the look and feel of your hallway but I think the problem with the door is not the door itself or the timber finish of the door, it is the fact that it is a large solid feature in the centre of clear glass. To balance it, I’d consider either putting something like plantation shutters on your sidelights or changing the door to one that has clear glass panels in it.

Am thinking that could be one of my issues - if I was to replace the door, clear glass panels was the direction I was going, but maybe to save on costs and retain the lovely wooden door, shutters would be a good consideration as well as all the other fabulous ideas provided - jute runner, changing decor on hall table etc.

Love all the suggestions so far. Could you look to move the hall table to the other side, with a large painting on the wall between the two niches, remove the paintings within and replace with pottery, 1 per niche and then as per Julies photos, plus a lamp and a floor runner .

I love your door, you don’t get many that are as unique as yours, you could always highlight it even further by adding vertical battens stained to match , could look fabulous.

For the inside , I'd add a rug . It helps stop stuff getting dragged further in , but mainly it will add some colour -- I'd probably go bright red , but almost any colour or even mix of colours , will work .

Personally , I'd be more inclined to focus on the outside view -- it is presumably what is seen from the street . The screen door design looks pretty 'prison' to me , so that would be the main thing I'd swap -- the door itself is nice !

Add a couple of pot plants , in nice pots ( not just $10 terracota ones ) , one each side . Me , I'd do the pots a similar shade to the rug ( red , in my example ) so some people will see the tie-in .

The final thing though - the interior , the door , etc , all give me upmarket vibes . Then the ceiling above the door looks to be basic ferro-cement sheet, with cheap joiner down the middle , like the builder used off-cuts ! I'd price getting it plastered ( probably need the panels replacing -- I don't think plaster sticks to that ferro panelling all that well ? ) , so it might be $1000 plus , but worth it IMO -- maybe add 4 modern LED downlights at the same time , in place of the one single dated style one .
