Renovating Design Dilemma Exterior

Who do you get to help with interior design flow into lanscaping?

Hi there

We have a 4 bedroom house and the whole outdoor area (back and front) is in bad need of a redesign and update but we don't want to do the landscaping in isolation without getting help with how the house flows into the outdoor spaces. There are example of poor lighting in the house and I think its important to create a design that tackles both.

However, I'm not sure who to look for to help with this!? I've researched landscapers and landscape designers but they can't help with the interior aspects.

I'm in Melbourne bayside. Can anyone recommend a group of individual who does this? Or at least the type of profession I should seek to engage!?

Hello John, Although I have no qualifications in landscaping I do have architectural drafting skills and could help you with this. AND bring the two together for you. I have done a similar thing at my own home where the garden contained every imaginable weed and far too many large trees when we moved in... it is still in progress so as we say "we are getting there!" We are doing a very similar renovation and extension. Both the bathroom, ensuite, laundry and kitchen freshen up and building an extra living room (kids playroom etc) and a deck extension too. We have a cedar cottage and have used a company to draw up our plans that defiantly design in a cottage/Hamptons style. I plan on using a interior designer/decorator just to tie the how new look. I'm getting lots off advice and ideas from Houzz, but when it comes to the crunch I want to work with someone who has an eye for my space. My ideas books are ready to show, and the final plans were just sent through to us on Friday. Good luck with whatever you decide and I hope your project is exactly what you've been dreaming off too.

Never a truer word spoken. It is not only more efficient to understand in the early stages what part each person will play, but vital to the ongoing relationship. Sometimes clients aren't sure, you need to guide them along this process, asking questions and providing summaries of the briefing meeting (and subsequent meetings) goes a long way to ensuring communication lines stay open. Arranging regular meetings and collaborating via social media add to this and keep the client in the loop (unless of course they want to be out of it). Offering 3 types of services seems to work for me. Heavily involved - somewhat involved and somewhat preferring not to be involved. Always however, a detailed brief and ongoing planning and confirmation is required to ensure budgets and desires are being addressed suitably.

Go with your gut Tracy..... it is a big investment but I have found that if it makes you smile every time you walk into your kitchen you'll never regret it!!!! I've recently moved into a smaller downsized home with my 3rd black kitchen, with drawers, no cupboards, except for the pantry which we use as the crockery and wine glasses stash. Mine is matt but no handles = no hip bangers! I chose to use snow white stone bench tops, the walls are painted natural white while the floors are pale oak hybrid vinyl.

you probably need a crowd of tradesmen to do all the work (carpenter, kitchen cabinet maker, plumber, electrican. painter, tiler, flooring installer etc) and you can have a builder take control and organise all the workers but the actual design can be done by you or an architect, building designer or kitchen cabinet makers might be able to help but, it depends on what needs doing...why not post some photos and a plan or a rough sketch of the existing rooms (including measurements, position of windows and doors and names of adjoining rooms) with a list of what you like and don't like and invite HOUZZERS to make specific suggestions so that when you need to contact the professionals you have a better idea of what you need
