Ceiling Panels - need advice!

Recently built a pool cabana, always pictured cedar ceiling liner panels however quotes are 15k+. Looking for a more cost effective options without compromising on looks (we find that AliWood or pine looks too cheap). Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Timber is expensive. If you want a paint finish look at James Hardie groove lining boards. Vj panels. https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardiegroove-lining

Have you looked at plywood sheeting with a black shadow line, something like this but without the metal beams

Hi Tina, thanks for posting, it is all looking great. Shame about the panelling, but sometimes these things happen for a reason. It is great the armoire matches the doors so well when they are all on one wall, but I don't think you need to have the bed and side tables matching, especially when they are on another wall. My issue with painting furniture, while I love it, is the maintenance. It does chip over time and becomes one more thing to paint. I don't know what the timber is in your furniture but another possible option, especially to give you the coastal vibe is to lime it. To do this successfully, you will need to sand all the existing stain off it and go back to the raw timber. The darker the original timber, the less limed look you will get so bear that in mind too. I did an old bunk bed up that had seen better days, for my grands bedroom. It was a dark red wood, but with 4 coats of stain I got the look I was after which was that driftwood/coastal look. The whole thing looks totally new again. Sorry I can't post a photo as this function no longer works for me. Have a look at the Feast Watson range of liming stains, they have some gorgeous soft colours as well, but they let the timber show through rather than having the solid painted look. It is a very easy product to use, it dries quickly - I did the 4 coats over 2 days effortlessly. The hard work is in the sanding.

Looks a warm inviting room but the pale blue walls are a cool colour. First thing I would do is paint the walls Dulux China White. This will make a big difference to the feel. Grab yourself a sample tub and paint a big price of cardboard, move it around the room and you will see that it will look great in your room.

I don't have the dimensions right now, but it's small, probably just big enough to fit a single bed when the kid gets older, but will more likely be a study down the track (great sunlight with huge windows). The cot/changetable/dresser will fit, but it's not the type of room I'll spend a lot of time in on account of the size. Just for baby sleeping/changing. Definitely painting, thinking white, maybe a pale grey for the wainscotting. It does get great light which helps. I'd love to have a feature wall wallpapered but I just think it'll close the space too much. The wainscotting will definitely close the space visually, but won't impair the fit of the furniture. We could just leave the recesses (hoping they're a bit less obvious when painted white) and place furniture in front, but I'd prefer more of a finished look. Thanks for the tips!

Most things are possible if you throw enough money at it. Don't expect the skylight installer to respect the existing layout of the the timber panels. I would suggest you first engage a design professional to carefully measure up your ceiling, and design exactly where and how the shaft will connect with the existing timber ceiling, probably at a large scale of 1:20 or more. Get your installer to quote on the documentation so no assumptions or shortcuts can be made. Without seeing your room I would consider lining the shaft with a similar timber to your ceiling with similar details rather than the standard white plasterboard shaft. I might also consider a victorian style glazed bezel at the bottom of the shaft. All it takes is engaging the right design professional, Best of luck, Dr Retro of Dr Retro House Calls

Some good suggestions above. I’d add the manufactured deck decking boards. They’ll never look at goo as real cedar but you may be able to get a look you’re happy with. Have you had a builder quote using dressed cedar timber planks from a wood yard? You could then stain/seal them yourself. It still won’t be cheap but may get you a mid way compromise.

Hi Aleisha Polytec make an MDF wrapped spaced Batten system in woodgrain finishes that could work https://www.polytec.com.au/brochures/polytec-steccawood-prefinished-decorative-battens.pdf but you need to make sure they did not get wet. Perhaps increasing the depth of your Fascia Boards would help with minimizing blow-in moisture?

Another option, which is actually totally waterproof is a woodgrain finish aluminium batten system like https://www.decorativeimaging.com.au/building-products/decobatten/?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw-JG5BhBZEiwAt7JR64VrXGqEWPhS5NR1fYgfrjigV7FV51LflRdrY0IEkh4dVq_kXKBLPhoCOJoQAvD_BwE that you could install yourself. Cedar is very expensive and added to this is the cost of prep & sealing. Not sure how these alternatives compare in cost.

The Greenhaus Ascot Bamboo could also be a cost effective option, though I have found Bamboo Planks to be highly prone to warping and bowing so worth bearing this in mind with fixings if considered to be a option.
