Facade Suggestions

Hi there Design Eyes,

We are nearing the end of an arduous renovation that has not always gone according to plan. We have ended up with a facade that does not look anything like I originally envisioned due to the structure of the front of the original home. Maybe it will look different when everything is painted out!

I am wondering if anyone can help with suggestions of fretwork, faux shutters, sizes of pillars and verandah style/trimmings to give this home a more Hamptons/Queenslander vibe.

Additionally we would appreciate outdoor lighting suggestions that will add to the style and feel of the home.

Def no faux shutters. Have a search on Pintrest for Modern Coastal Exterior or Modern Hampton Exterior and you’ll see some inspiration pics. I’d add a small arbour over your front gate mirroring the garage roof line and planted with a climber.

sounds like you're worn out by all that hard work.. your new home looks gorgeous and is just waiting the final touches and landscaping...i would have a front verandah across the full width of the space with thicker square posts and a small (black?) table and chairs to balance the garage and, once you clear away all that builder's rubble and freshen up the old lawns, you should sit on the verandah and take your time to plan your new front gardens.. others will have lots of ideas for specific details

Greys and charcoals coming in, forget creams and very pale colours. Textures seem to be the next big thing inside and out. Maybe a mid to dark grey with stone that is a mixture of grey and white for the front portico pillars. Could be stacks tone, stone veneer or tiles that look like stone. Wouldn't go anywhere near timber Windows. They warp, peel, stick together after painting/varnishing and are a maintenance nightmare. Every decade or so they come into fashion, people discover all the problems again and they go out. There is a reason for the popularity of aluminium ones.

I agree w/MB D & D a change to full gable for carport and elimination of small Dutch gables would certainly change the look. I also think porch could be made to feature more prominently. Other than increasing height of its roof, could also consider increasing height of foundation (is it slab?) which would necessitate a couple of steps onto porch/verandah. I know this would increase cost of foundation somewhat, but an idea nonetheless. Our builder suggested that change to our new build, and it did make a positive difference.

After the bricks are refreshed, I suggest keeping it white. I would concentrate on colour in the landscaping. Great looking home.

I think that the pitched gable entrance porch would have added to your Hamptons look as per the 3d drawings I did for you, it all looks great though.

Bit late for the gabled front porch but Bigreaders 3rd picture would look great which extends Fret work across the front entrance and verandah

The horse has probably already bolted but typically the projecting gable forms for this style (in your case your garage) are best defined / articulated with a change of detail from the weatherboards. Something similar like shown in bigreader's images (fc sheet with strapping) would help lift the front facade and make it feel more authentically Hamptons detail. You may be able to build out over the weatherboards as opposed to replacing. What also helps is giving the fenestration some decent architraving detail. It's these extra layers/elements of trim that gives the presentation the vibe you're after, and gives opportunity for subtle colour variation between the trim and cladding that further adds depth and detail to the building

I'd also vote for either an entrance gable or verandah with some simplified timber/fret detail referenced from those images above....in regards to post sizing they need to be thicker than typically (125mm min) with base and top trimming if you really want to pull off the authentic look & proportion...
