Converting ‘shed’ to studio - need layout help please

We want to convert our ‘shed’ to a studio. The shed is brick and render construction which we recently re-roofed. We want to create three spaces - a main room (to house a sofa bed, tv etc), a store room and a small bathroom - shower, toilet and sink. As it is a small space we are limited to layout ideas. I am not sure what to do with the doors for the bathroom and store room. Two doors that both open into the main room or a big sliding door that goes across both? Could anyone suggest a better layout or door option pls? Thank you!

I think two separate doors. But you could consider bifold. Have you had an opinion on the cost of adding the plumbing? And an opinion from Council on the feasibility?

What are you wanting to store? Is it still shed type stuff? As space is tight and if you have opportunity to put up a cheap freestanding shed (for storage) it might be better to accommodate a better 1.6 x 3.1 .bathroom right across the back of the shed and not take so much space up and give you more like a 4.5m x 3.1 space to have a den/retreat that is more flexible for purpose - also storage accessed through a nicely fitted out space could be less than practical

Hi Lil, I believe your original plan works much better than the revised version. While the notion of ideal working widths is great, the larger problem here is the post. I worked on a project very similar to this last year where a post could either be connect to, or separate from the island. What we found was that by separating the island the space between island and post became very awkward. It's not enough of a space to comfortably walk through or be seated at the island in front of. Instead of your room feeling open and generous in proportion, it is going to start to feel cramped and awkward. We have a kitchen in our showroom (Kitchen Studio Tauranga NZ) with a 6ft gap between bench and back wall and it works wonderfully. It allows someone to work at the sink and a second at the island with ease. Stick with the original plan. It will feel a lot more spacious, without compromising work flows.

Hi Ben, advise you engage a Pro to assist you with the front end design process. All these design decisions need to be founded securely on construction cost knowledge, and it's invariably about balancing your requirements to budget within context. Whether it's sub floor, 2nd storey or going out or whatever there are always options on how to achieve your needs and pro/cons & costs to stack up. Working out various configurations of spaces etc is relatively easy, however designing to budget is not, which is where you get the value of utilising professional services for this. These types of projects and investments involved are with all due respect too large, complex and significant to risk DIY'ing the critical front end. You can give it a go but I'll bet you continue to go round in circles. As we explain to our clients in the preliminary conversations, it's not your job to "work it out". All you need to "work out" at this stage is clarifying your particular living requirements and nominate a budget. The "how" and balancing up/negotiation/compromising between the project priorities/requirements and the budget limit is the job of the professional, what the design process deals with, and what we (as design professionals) have the superior capacity/experience to assist you working through it all to achieve the best solution for your particular situation/scenario. Annette, Have a look at this. Not having dimensions is tricky but if something like this will work all well and good. The important things are to ensure the toilet has light and ventilation. That the doors from garage into kitchen is not a zig zag course. Use a glazed door for the laundry, That there is benching of at least 1200 to 1500 beside cooktop and sink. In this plan the fridge has lots of breathing space and pantry can become an extra work space if you need it. As long as the doors are out of the traffic way. BUT as I say without the measurements...... If the door hall to laundry (at top) would work for you then the fridge could back into the doorway at end of island but the trip around would be further with shopping from the car.+ - ? I hope this helps and note to others: work out ALL the details before getting to framing. Frame is easy to move but further on it is more difficult to rearrange. Good Luck, Margot

I have changed the living area to the North East, knowing that you have such a large lot these suggestions could be placed in any direction. Your driveway coming up in the North corner will give great access to the living quarters and then follow onto the parking and garage to the rear. The proposed house to be built on the other side of the livable shed. The entrance into the Gym steps back in on the western boundary which will provide cover plus highlight windows on the western side will provide light and ventilation and a cross breeze via doors and windows on the other side of the large open space. I have combined a Locker room with the laundry opening into the 3 way bathroom. There's also a small room which can be used for storage or O/N clients. All doors should be a min 900 in the Gym area for disabled visitors. The living quarters have a large WIR for the your sons partner and the kitchen could have a washer dryer in the cupboard marked Pantry if wanted. By having the living space facing this way allows you to see any approaching visitors and clients

Given shed exists where is your water line and sewerage lines This may impact which side you put the bathroom on. Next what is being stored. If lawnmower etc then suggest external access only due to fumes. Otherwise can they share an internal door?

As others have said. What are you storing? I would cut into shed side and add a external door to access storage area. With having two hinged doors in side the studio area, you are reducing useful space. I would close up the internal door to store area, and add a sliding door to bathroom area. This will then create more wall space for kitchenette, or tv, wall unit etc etc.

Meant to post this yesterday. two ideas, the store would be better elsewhere to allow more space but even an external double door to give easy access would works better but depends on what you are storing A coffee table that can be pulled up to dining height and moved when the night and day lounge is extended.

Thanks so much everyone for the really helpful responses. In terms of what we are storing - will be things like Christmas decorations, camping gear etc. All ‘messy’ shed stuff will be stored in another location.

We’ve had some quotes for the plumbing and spoken to council. We need council permission for change of use.

Going by the external door it's not a tall ceiling and would suggest painted exposed rafters at least in the living space.
