Hi there, we have an Australian 80’s fireplace with knobby bricks surrounded by some decent built in jarrah cabinets.

The fireplace is being removed and replaced with a modern version and carpets going down in front (light colour).

Seeking some advice ideas on whether to restrain the current setup and just clean the bricks or do full makeover.

Just to clarify. When you say “fireplace is being removed.” Do you mean the heater is being removed and replaced. Or the entire brick surround is also being removed. And you are wondering whether to keep the bricks instead? If you are keeping the bricks, they are very dark. You could cut the protruding bricks to all be level and paint all bricks a lighter colour. The side, built in cabinets appear to be different colours, is this just my computer screen? If not I would also make sure they are the same colour stain. Depending on what aesthetic you are after for the room, the cabinets could also be painted.

For $300 I’d aim for: new light fitting, change out handles/knobs, paint splashback and a new blind/paint window frame. The current kitchen is inoffensive and functional, and the budget is too low to change out cabinet doors and bench tops. Add some styling items and you’ll be good to go.
