Furniture Design Dilemma Living Room

Small Living Room needing a lot of love.

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for advice on redecorating my living room and would love your input! I'm open to buying all new furniture, including the couch, and I want to create a homey, cozy space that feels inviting yet practical.

A few things to consider:

The room is not very big, and we are three adults using it daily.
We have pets, so I’m leaning toward another leather couch (possibly in brown or cream) for durability.
While I'd love to remove the fireplace, that’s a future project due to budget constraints, so it has to stay for now.

I’d appreciate any recommendations for furniture, layout ideas, or even color schemes that could make the space feel warm, cozy, and functional. Thanks in advance for your help!

If the black couch works for functionality I’d keep it. I’m assuming you like your art work so have picked up that as the theme. As above wall to wall sheers along the front. A “vintage” rug, plants and cushions. Add some texture with some wicker, wood or cane. Incorporate some plants. Or I found a more neutral inspiration pic if that’s the way you want to go. Starting a mood board using pics from here on Houzz or Pintrest will help guide your choices.

Is the heater still in use. If not pull it out. If it is get a fire screen to put in front while not in use. You need curtains to soften the room. Freedom have some good floor length drapes that semi transparent. Some pot plants will also help. The black theme is quite heavy. But it is all personal taste. I have cream couch and like light and bright

Thank you Tilda :) So we have an artist called Geoff Winckle, he paints beautiful landscapes and has some pieces which have an alpine feel. I have have attached one called 'Afternoon Snowscape'. I think the warm tones in this piece would complement the cooler tone it sounds like you have chosen for your walls. I've also included 'Sunset over Rocks-Mt Wellington, Tasmania' by Jacqui Cleijne. As far as deer go I have attached a piece called 'The Messanger' by our new featured artist Jason Moad.

Thanks for all the suggestions. It's taken a bit of time but I have collected a few pieces to make the space look better. I decided on a table lamp and have grouped some photos behind it. I'm really happy with the result. a couple of new cushion covers for some more colour which I love. I also have a clock for the far right wall and a picture for behind the couch. i don't love the picture but it will do until I can find something I really like (and have the funds for). thanks for all the great suggestions.

The above idea is good, or you could get some cardboard boxes, cut them to the right dimensions, tape them together and lay them out where the furniture would go (I am better with three dimensions than 2 when it comes to figuring out what works! )

Yes definitely consider your furniture placement. Your lights should connect to the rest of the rooms decor. That is over the coffee table or over side tables. A cluster might work if you vary heights and consider some changes in size and shape of each light. See some examples below. Your light choice is lovely. It will however throw that pattern all around the room, something to think about if it's to be your only light source. You say there will be a fan as well. This will make the pendants move, another point to consider.

The heater is electric and not plugged in. Use some gentle force and pull it out. Clean the fireplace and add shelving or plants or baskets etc etc. This will cost nothing but time.

What about building a seat, storage unit all along under the window use it to sit on, put flowers on and store stack of books.... that is a start. I love the painting and think if you pick up some of those colours in pillows and throws you will have your cosy!! Easy done it is lovely!
