Design Dilemma Fireplaces Living Room

Thoughts about installing a wall mounted gas log fire.

I would appreciate any feedback about wall mounted gas log fireplaces. Although expensive I am more concerned that it will take up too much room into the lounge room bearing in mind the cabinet work necessary. Has anybody had any issues with TV cables etc. The gas fire will heat the 90 sqm and TV will be fitted into cabinet. Do you feel it will be ‘too much’ for the lounge room?

Why a gas log fire place? It means you have to install gas lines, do you have gas in your home already? An expensive exercise.

If you after the aesthetics from a log fire, why not look at these electric heaters with the faux log fire. They literally plug in to your power point. There is no issue with having the television above. There is no need for the expansive build out for installing a gas fire. The result of heat is the same, but a lot easier. And if you have solar panels that is even better. They give a genuine look of a log fire.

LB I think you confuse me as much as I probably confuse you. LOL. ;-) I noticed I had some crazy auto correct word in my last post which I think was supposed to say "able" (I can't remember now what it even said) ;-) Oldroo I think the builder said something like sticking the old roof bats under the floor. The rain, yes we had it here more then a week straight!! It was great because 1) I was on the sunny coast in Qland that week! And 2) we are on tank water which we have been running off empty for about 6 months now and we just got a second tank connected a few weeks ago as well as guttering on our shed and guess what.... Our tanks were overflowing for days!! We could of filled 3 or 4 tanks at that rate!! So I am very happy about the rain!! :-D

Gas or slow combustion wood heater

buying wood cost us at least twice the price of gas just for space heating and then we had to transport and find undercover space (away from the house because of the risk of white ants) for a pile about 2m x 2m for the season and then regularly clean out the flue and the heater but it depends on your wood supply and if you have access to natural gas or LPG.. Gas heaters and wood heaters seem to have a similar price tag but in a cold climate if i had the time to look after a wood heater i would choose the most efficient wood burning combustion stove for cooking, hot water and heating and have an electric stove, gas log fire and solar hot water and electricity to subsidise the power bills when i can't be bothered with wood or supply is interrupted...enjoy your new home

We had one with the two little doors and pretend coal inside. After a few months the bulb blew, so we bought another, but seems the flame thing actually stopped working, not the bulb...the bulb although new, didn't get the flames working again unfortunately, as it was really really good! This was a portable one, 10 yrs ago, and we still have it, and use it for the heater. A wall one would look great! I think they are perfect for what you need...not naff at all. And cheap if you just run the flame and not the heat.

I have upgraded floor grills in aged bronze that work with the floor boards and are very unobtrusive. I would say that they are the most aesthetically pleasing option. For atmosphere you may be able to add an electric log-look fire to one of the fireplaces. Their appearance has improved dramatically over the last few years. I have a real log combustion fire in my fireplace. It is absolutely lovely to have on a winters day but does come with maintenance and is not practical for everyday use.

Just as a note: my friend has the first fire place that I have mentioned. It heats an area in there open kitchen living dining area of 82sqm.

Thanks I did briefly look at these. I have 90sqm to heat ( bearing in mind stairwell loss of heat) so electric won’t cut it. They do look beautiful but not functional. We have gas already so will be cheaper to run at night. Our solar costs are cheaper during the day. Thankyou for taking the time to comment. I’m very grateful 👍

In that case, get the actual size of the built out that is required to install your chosen gas faux log fire. Use builders blue Tape and tape the floor with the measurements. This will give you a good idea of the space you are losing. If you are prepared to lose that space out of your 90sqm, go for it. You could put built in display/book shelving on either side to help the gas fire build out blend into the wall.
