Staining the staircase

I am building a house. My staircase is Tasmanion Oak. My flooring is blackbutt laminate. I would like to preserve the natural look of the stairs while matching with the flooring. What products you could suggest?

I’d suggest taking a sample of your flooring and an off cut of the Tasmanian oak to Bunnings and they will be able to help you with stain selection.

Hi Hu, If you are building, then my suggestion is to have your stair case built with Blackbutt not Tasi Oak.

I think that you should consider the longevity of the '90's plum carpet. Don't base you choice based on that carpet colour as if it is already 25 years old, and will have faded from its original colour. It may need replacement within the next ten years. You won't be able to match the existing colour with a new carpet. Have you considered replacing the carpet with a consistent floor finish through both rooms? If you're aiming to preserve the natural grain of the stairs while toning them to match the floor, I’d suggest looking into a water-based stain or tintable sealer. They’re great for bringing out the natural texture without yellowing over time.
You could test a few sample stains on offcuts. Something with a warm honey or light brown tone might blend well with blackbutt. Also, a satin finish can help it look more consistent with laminate while still feeling like real timber underfoot.
