Too much gutter overhang

My roof tin overhangs my storm gutter too much. Can't get my hand in to clean and also overflows during storms.
House is made of cool room panels and gutter is attached to wall.
Can I pack the gutter mounts off the wall or will I need to cut the tin back?
Anyone have an elegant solution?

If the roof sheet overhang is too long, spacing the gutter out from the wall (“packing off” the brackets) is usually not a good fix. It can reduce the gutter’s structural stability, mess with the fall (slope), and in heavy rain the water can overshoot the gutter entirely. It may look like an easy solution, but it tends to create more problems than it solves.

The cleaner options are:
- Trim the roof overhang slightly so water drops cleanly into the gutter. This is the most reliable long-term fix if the overhang is excessive.
- Install a gutter apron / drip edge that extends into the gutter. This redirects water properly without cutting too much metal.
- Use wider or deeper gutters if replacement is feasible, giving you more catch area.
- For cleaning access, a gutter guard system can reduce how often you need to reach inside, though it won’t fix overflow caused by poor alignment.
Overflow during storms is the key signal here—water isn’t entering the gutter efficiently, so geometry needs correcting, not just spacing. Cutting back the tin slightly or adding a drip edge is typically the most “elegant” and effective approach.

What ever colour you like is what you should go with - I have a black roof and a white house and white down pipes and guttering - the plastic type. All I notice is how dirty is looks when the winter has set in and been and gone and you are left with green mildew on the guttering and down pipes. If I have a choice and it suited my house I would go for a dark colour - however if you are going to tin you will want colour steel as the sun will just bake black or dark paint. Also look at the life time warranty of both the plastic and steel to determine which may last longer and be cheaper to fix longer term.

I agree with MB Design and Drafting. I rejected two homes based on the building reports alone. It wasn't that there is a lot of work to do or that it would be expensive. It was the fact I was going to have to spend $$$ and time fixing stuff that would never be seen because the prior owners failed to maintain the house properly. I would be spending my first year in those homes organising trades, waiting for people to show up or not, dealing with the headache of unforseen extra problems and cost blowouts. Not to mention I wondered how much unseen damage there was caused by lack of maintenance. Ultimately I purchased a more modest home with less impressive facade and floorplan because it was well maintained and any money I spent would be spent on fun things like decorating or improving fixtures. Plus it already had a major feature I wanted and that feature had been done professionally so it was well worth paying for. It doesn't matter to a buyer how pretty a house is if their heart is broken by a building report that tells them their dream home has a laundry list of boring jobs and unnoticed problems that need attention asap. 9 times out of 10 they will walk on the property than bother renegotiating the price and getting professionals in to assess the $ involved.

I'd go for the contrast , and go charcoal . Not really a highlight colour , but it would show a reasonable 'break' between the light cream and the light grey , in a reasonably subtle way , but surfmist or similar would achieve nothing IMO .

I seem to focus on different things to everyone else , so I'll give my take . The red tiles suit -- they are period , and basically expected . It would be difficult to spray them a lighter shade ( Surfmist , silvery grey , silvery blue etc ) so I'd discard those as options . So you are left with charcoal , blue or brown -- the second 2 aren't an improvement IMO , and all 3 will add to the heat . Clean the existing tiles , assuming they are in good condition , and add a similar mid/dark red on the extension . White walls , black windows ( actually , I'd go a charcoal , looks similar but just toned down enough IMO ) , and the red roof is pleasant , if a little boring and predictable . Now the 'detail' parts that grate with me . The existing roof has overhangs , no overhangs , gutters , no gutters , barge boards , no barge boards -- it's no consistent . So here's you chance to make it flow better . AND the other thing -- the 'skirting' timber has warped enough to be annoying . I don't like it being white -- it makes it too bulky . Maybe , just maybe , doing this base in a charcoal or even silvery charcoal would make the gaps less obvious , and maybe I'm OCD , but I'd probably rip most or all of the 'lower' wood off , and replace , but $200-300 of paint may help hide it , so that may be worth a go . Assuming you are sticking with the roof colour too , I'd actually do the one 'top' rail ( around 600mm from the ground in the front ) in a similar colour to the roof -- maybe a bit brighter red . If I was really picky , I'd also suggest going for a darker colour grey on the steps too -- the existing one is fine , but it's dated , plus if you do the bottom 'skirt' in charcoal , this will look too light and too obvious .

Cutting the panels back is a massive pain and usually ends up looking like a jagged mess, especially with insulated cool room material. I’d definitely go with packing the gutter out instead. You can use some 20mm or 30mm plastic spacers or even treated timber blocks behind the brackets to give you that gap. It solves the overflow issue because the water actually has a chance to drop into the center of the tray rather than shooting right over the edge, and you'll finally be able to get a scoop in there to clear out the muck. Just make sure you use longer stainless screws to account for the extra depth so the weight of a full gutter doesn't pull the whole thing off the wall.
