Hello Biko, there is no reason why you can't move this to a preferred position if where it is bothers you. Just bear in mind that your controller may have a thermostat in it and will need to be in an open position exposed to airflow as well as where you have easy access to it.

They can move it. It’s just painful to do as they’ll need to reopen the plaster. If you’re going to be there long term you could get it moved properly as it will always bother you. If you want to leave it we’ll need some pictures of further back to add context.

What is your plan for the hall? At present you are focussing on it as it is otherwise a blank space. Add pictures along wall and focus changes. You could put a table below and have focus on table and decor items

Given you've said it was done post-construction it's not a "permanent fixture" per se, and the cables used for aircon control are typically prefabricated with plenty of extra length so there's provision to simply have it relocated. Relocation means you can move on and not fret. The choice therefore is either (a) relocate, suck it up, patch and paint the cable hole and holes made for plugs to mount the base, (b) go with Kate's idea, rendering it a much smaller feature that you currently perceive it to be or even (c) hang pictures of various sizes that will make it just another rectangle on the wall and work with my wifey's rule that after two weeks you're not going to care anywhere near as much as you do right now.

If relocating - it can't go above the light switch as there's an electrical cable running up from there in the wall (and it would look odd there anyway), so the only other consideration other than Malcolm's advice regarding the inbuilt thermostat is what's on the other side of the wall from the controller. If it's been run up in a conduit or what's called a duct (like a square conduit) then that would have to be relocated to suit.
