Triangle feature window, yes or no?

Debating whether we put a triangle window in the rake. Photo taken is from the front door. Second photo is an idea I’m thinking. We have just removed the wall and opened up the house. This room will be the dining room and idea of this Reno is to have view of backyard as we are on acreage and love the trees

Which way does it face?

On acreage privacy doesn't sound like an issue, but think about other things, like whether it will allow too much hot sun in the house in summer or be prone to condensation in winter, and like whether it will direct unwanted glare onto tv or desk or kitchen work surface at certain times of the day? Being a triangular shape makes fitting any screening more difficult, especially if it needs to open and close.

Window furnishings are tricky on raked windows. So consider those needs too. The extra light is great but not so for west facing heat.

Thanks. The lattice has been taken off and yes I hated it too. I think the best thing to do is paint the "triangles" in Dune. Raku is a rich dark grey colour with some brown in it. This style of house is called a "Statesman" house and those of you who live in Perth will know them well as they are known for being well built homes. I like our house but not the turrets and they must connect with the Dune render to tie the scheme together. Before the render we had a peach colour brick. The window frames will be painted surf mist. Any ideas for plants to landscape the front garden part. Thanks again.

Sorry but I fail to see the relevance or relationship of this tile to the rest of what is going on. The stained glass window is a strong feature and there appears to be no relationship or relevance to this. It is so close and yet so far away from the main wall tile it looks like a tonal mistake. If it is a Kids bathroom I fail to see what age group of kids would find this attractive or exciting? I must be missing something here? Every individual element needs to have a reason for being there for the whole space to work. Very often individual elements look great on their own bot look a shambles in the wrong mix so unless there is a good reason for this choice from a design perspective it it may end up being a good element in the wrong place. Sue, congratulations. You've not only identified a colour you feel happier about, you've actually created it. I suspect you'll now be able to create a pleasing mix of warm greys, plywood browns, stone tones, coppers or bronzes, warm whites, etc; maybe with a bit of yellow added come spring; and you'll be able to live with the brownish sofa until you're ready to update or reupholster. I have some KAS cushion covers from a couple of years ago which show how this kind of colour mix can be done. One has stylised flowers (a la Mexican) in grey, brown and caramel with a touch of burnt orange. (You mention liking ochre.). Another is lighter grey, brown, taupe and bone-white on a natural linen. A third (less subtle) is warm greens with brown, taupe, yellow, white and a little aqua. I'm not saying go for styles that are a few years out of fashion. But do be confident enough to resist a harsh, hard-edged option if a gentler one is right for your temperament and household and the room's aspect. Robyn

Hi everyone, Thanks for the comments. The room is 2m x 3.6m. The window and door are at either end on the 2m part. Was thinking about using this tile along one wall, yes all 3.6m. It is a porcelain slab measuring 2.7m x 1.2m. 3 slabs for the wall. Lighting is good, no option for skylight. On seeing the tile it's like wow! But the more I think about it I feel like i'm trying too hard and forcing it to work. I'll aim to get a sample and see how things sit together. So far using windows paint to edit pictures hasn't helped. Thanks again, Grant

I like the look in magazines etc and they are great for adding light - but recently went to a friends house who had similar and I couldn't help noticing how filthy it was, while the rest of her windows were spotless. I'm guessing they would be a pain to keep clean!

Anything with west in it in terms of glazing rings alarm bells for summer heat.

On the other hand, hot air rises so maybe a high window gives you the opportunity to include some form of air extraction at the top to help with ventilation and cooling. But I can see you already have high windows.

You could have a read of the info in this website, and calculate the movement of the sun for your location and so on, to understand what effect such a window would have.

If it was a regular shaped window you could add something later if you find you need it. External shading is best for reducing heat gain indoors. Maybe the trees outside already give a reasonable amount of shade to that side? The possible difficulty with planning to add something later if needed, is the triangular shape.
