It would good to post the whole floorplan with dimensions wall to wall if this is a new build, also Aspect is important.

As above we need the full floor plan. On first view I’d turn the island 90 degrees and flip the living and dining areas. Dining will work best closer to the deck and you won’t have the dilemma of the furniture up against the windows. The TV area will be snug but with good furniture choices it will work.

Here is a copy of the original floor plan when built. The only change to this is we already removed the wall between kitchen and dining and installed the island bench per the first floor plan.

I agree with bigreader. Put the dining next to your sliding doors in the current family space. Kids tv and play space in the dining area. Once they are older they will in the separate living room watching tv with you. It also then gives sight lines from entry of the dining table, and not a toy/play area. The family space can have a wonderful 8 seater dining setting with room all around it, instead of a stuck in the corner. No need to change the sliding doors.

Given the changes you’ve made already limit your options I would then go with a simple solution keeping the living area where you’ve shown it. Add a single glass pane door between the existing sliding door and the kitchen. Match it in style to the existing door. This will give you everyday access. Then use the right size and shape furniture for the living space so nothing is up against the glass. Your measurements show this is possible. If you need greater access for gatherings move the furniture and use the existing door as is.

Unfortunately turning the island bench would not work considering its width, it would not leave much space on either side to move into the kitchen/dining.

We did consider at one point swapping the dining and family areas however the size of the dining area, proximity to the cooking appliances and that there are windows on both wall surfaces we thought limited again the styling options to create a family/play zone.

Your suggestion of a single glass door to the left of the current sliding door is not something we had considered but it is a very good idea. This would allow us to have more convenient access from the kitchen and let in more light and airflow.

Were you thinking something like this aluminum hinged door which could be color matched to the existing aluminum sliding door?

Yes. Something like the door you’ve shown matched to the existing slider.

I do notice on the original plan there is a wall plate point near when you’re thinking of adding a door. Have that checked out so you know possibilities and costs.

Hello HouseRenoHelp, The first thing I saw when I looked at your plan was to move the kitchen into the dining space and have the dining near the verandah and the north: sit eating lunch with sun on your feet: bliss!! But it maybe too late for that. I like the idea of you creating the corner for the sitting area: so plan B of the options above. windows only by the sitting area and the doors nearer the kitchen: that would be more convenient for the kitchen too. and divide the deck into two zones too. This way the traffic through the house has to go round the sitting area not through it: no one needs or like the TV interrupted by stray children wandering through! The opening from the lounge room into the dining is quite different: is it really needed: would a door off the hallway be better and close that off help the dining area? OR doors off the family room: then light and breezes could flow through the whole area. Just ideas. Looks like a lovely home. Enjoy! Margot PS I think a single slider to the deck is a good idea and possible cheaper than stacker doors too. Less steel needed to hold it all up! Double cavity sliders from lounge into family room could be lovely: glazed maybe?
