Originally dark and cramped, this North Shore home lacked flow, storage, and natural light.

Before & After Floor Plan:

The bathroom’s awkward layout, with the toilet placed centrally, restricted movement and made the space feel small. Poor natural light only amplified this. Through a thoughtful redesign, the toilet and shower were swapped to improve circulation and create a larger shower zone, while a new skylight transformed the space into a bright, open retreat. A custom vanity and mirrored cabinet introduced much-needed storage, while brass fittings and a soft coastal palette brought warmth and character.

In the kitchen, clever updates enhanced both function and cohesion. Teal joinery, graphic tiles, and timber detailing added texture and colour, connecting with the flooring and creating visual flow throughout. Structural adjustments resolved a level change between the kitchen and terrace, achieving seamless indoor-outdoor living.

The low ceilings were managed with a tailored solution that preserved proportion and comfort, while large-format windows now flood the home with light and city views. The result is a calm, connected home that feels brighter, more spacious, and effortlessly livable, proof that small, well-considered design moves can make a big difference.

Looks like quite a loss of functionality with the sink between those 2 tall areas, the lack of bench seating and the loss of the storage to the side. But guess that's what they wanted. Would be interested to see what rest of room looks like.

Hi @Donna Derham & @ausjoinery great comments and ideas. However, answering the clients brief, working within their budget and navigating existing conditions formulates the design outcome. Whilst interpreting all of these requirements within a specific design style. For example, the clients budget did not allow for changes to the existing upper level concrete floor slab in the bathroom which meant we needed to retain the existing hob to satisfy building constraints. This demonstrates how important and crucial the discovery phase is with a client at the beginning of a project, to work through and solve problems before construction phase has started, avoiding costly changes and satisfying the project brief, budget and time frame.

When the owners first approached us, their vision for the home was clear: it was all about the breathtaking views. With this in mind, we were tasked with creating a design that captured the scenery without complicating things - simplicity was key, and staying within budget was essential to avoid overcapitalizing. We had a very tight timeline of 6 weeks to complete the 2 bathrooms and kitchen, as the clients were due to go overseas and wanted everything sorted before their arrival back home. Before: After: Despite its age and semi-detached nature, we transformed the property into a family haven, where indoor and outdoor spaces flow seamlessly. We also ensured that the client's non-negotiable—a luxurious bath—became a standout feature in the home’s design. The result is a beautiful blend of practicality and comfort, where every detail has been thoughtfully executed to enhance family living, all within the 6-week deadline, as promised.
