Yes the window is way too small. And why black given the white skylight and timber patio doors? Can you post a floor plan. Are the skylights existing and where would pendants hang from to be over island?

We plan on changing the timber door to a black stacker. The original house plan you had to go through a bedroom to get to the backyard which wasn't ideal so we opened all three rooms to create an open living space and installed skylights to bring in some light. I was thinking of installing a pendant light where the red cross is.

I think a single off centre pendant will look odd and detract from the sky lights which are a feature.

I plan on changing it where I can like the window/cabinet colour. We decided on 2pac paint for the cabinets and the dark colour is already chipping

How sufficient is the current lighting? For a feature light a cluster of 3 add Lin pendants would work at the x. But if the bench is not well lit you may need to install some track lighting along the beam. Consider just changing the back of the island to lighten the kitchen look.

Just going back to the window, I mainly wanted it for ventilation. Would a sliding window looked better?

If it is existing window I’d leave it unless it bothers you. Sliding vs awning of same size will make little diff. Think about the functionality for you.

It’s a lovely kitchen, changing the paint colour as you suggested to maybe all white could look stunning, I would choose your pendant/ pendants first as this could just balance the small window before doing anything major, love the idea of stacking doors to give you that extra open living space.

Gorgeous aren’t they siriuskey, sharp and minimalist for the corner above bench. Also if you paint that window frame white it will blend in perfectly.

Hello Sar, I like the design of the kitchen: it looks very functional but the dead corner is inconvenient. The only way to avoid it is to loose the benching along the short wall which maybe too small a prep space. I think the window is too small and would love to see a splash back window there that slides so people do not bump heads on the awing outside... OUCH! It may not be worth the hassle and cost to change it though: a builder can tell you approximate price to alter the whole wall and internals. Go well and enjoy! Cheers Margot

Thanks Margot I appreciate your advice! My husband reminded me that we can't make the window any wider since there's two support beams in place on either side. 🫠 He could swap it for a higher sliding window but like many said it's too much work and not worth the hassle.

What could you do to lose the benching to fix a dead corner?

Hello Sar, I think the only way to loose the dead corner is to move the sink to the very end of the existing bench with DW next, then the cook top to the far end. Have to loose the over head cupboards too. The pantry and fridge stay where they are but the corner will have the cook top. Bench between it and sink. I do not know it is worth the hassle of that tho. The alternative is to place the cook top across the corner: With drawer under neath it it works very well with bench both sides for two people to prep beside the cook top at once. I always prefer a wall oven tower and with the corner cook top it would leave little bench on the pantry/fridge side but it would help the corner.... swings and round abouts I'm afraid!! siriuskey there's is a roof ridge in that spot unfortunately. I would've loved if the skylights ended there! I had Google Gemini edit the image. Hopefully those changes in real life will help lighten up the space 😅 Ignore the nook in the island!

When I say 'we' I mean my husband, he's the handy man that actually installed all these skylights and installed that window I regretfully chose 😂

Great to have a talented Husband, if you could raise the lower part of the ceiling it would open up the room and remove dark corners, and I think would look lovely.

The skylights are 1400mm X 550mm. Towards the cooktop there's a roof ridge so it's a little more complicated to open up. He wouldn't be able to install a skylight there either

I was hoping that it would work with the existing skylights and adding another sloping ceiling to the right, Cathedral style ceiling. I'am sure your clever husband can work it out.

This from your example, down lights can be black or white, from Beacon the track can have downlights plus Julie example Pendant, you might have two beams if there's already one on each side of the sink window. The roof pitch could have a glass panel depending on the aspect

This keeping your colour scheme, ignore the window above cooktop and the extra passage space beside the fridge

When we renovated our kitchen, I had the same kind of doubts. Adding a simple pendant on the right side of the island really makes a difference and gives the space more depth. I agree the window could be a bit larger. It would definitely improve the natural light. We ended up going with an all-white kitchen and paired it with light oak herringbone floors from braagfloor. It completely brightened the space while still feeling warm, not cold at all.
