Highlight window - Louvre or Awning

Hi,

North eastern elevation of our proposed build in the hills district. Sydney

Raked ceiling with highlight windows, 4.2m height

For those that have such highlight windows, what works better? Louvre windows or awning windows, planning to motorize either way. 3mx0.6m

Louvres great for letting in more breeze but can be difficult to get seal and harder to clean.

But In some respect easier to clean as you can take the panes out from inside to clean. Awning windows you will need to get on roof to clean. Same for any upper storey window

Have you considered laminated and tinted glass for the windows, daytime privacy and noise stop all in one job. To me the vertical louvres look prison-like! We had the same dilemma and did the upgrade on the glass, simple, sleek and uncluttered facade and cooler in the summer as the heat is deflected with the reverse in winter plus the heat stays in the room rather than flying out the window.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. Thanks for the tip, Timandra Design & Landscaping, about avoiding stark white. That's a very neat finish on your windows, Melodie, but we have too many windows to consider changing the frames. Karen, painting the frames is not realistic for us, but thanks for the tip about Scyon Linea. I'd not heard of it before but it looks very interesting. Sharon, I'm fairly keen on some external window shading because we live in Brisbane and it makes a big difference to the heat in those areas. I like your idea of a solid grey awning, though, and agree that it might lift the '80s image into something more modern.

hi MB - I live in Sydney .. I designed my house in 1988 to be 'passive solar' - I looked at Louvres back then but chose Awnings bcoz the Louvres in 1988 did not have screens or Locks… I think if you lived somewhere really cold you get more benefit from 'double glazing'- but, these days the really cold Northern countries use 'triple glaze' and thermal energy... for you, opting for a few on your Northern side with deep eaves would be sensible A couple of years ago, I finally replaced my Block-Out Verticals with Plantation Shutters - the Plantations look great and when shut keep heat and cold out... the verticals did the same thing but the look was outdated and got ratty ….

always depends on climate, orientation and outlook from the room..louvres are ideal for tropical climates, awnings in temperate climates and fixed windows where you need light without ventilation and for odd shaped glazing

Having lived in my current living/dining same size as yours with more highlight windows and also south facing, its not really required to be operable to let 'heat' out but great for natural light! ( @new estate western syd). But i did had double glazing and more sliding doors for cross ventilation. And the location of your windows to be open, its not a great location to do the stack effect, it would be more beneficial to relocate to the opposite side. Have also a acreen front door to aid the cross vent further.
