1 or 2. Skillion roofs look great and are easy to construct. Can you extend the skillion's as your veranda/carport as well? 3 looks too cheapy, like was mentioned before, 'a kit home'. Dare I say 'bland, ho-hum'. Quality Federation and pitched roof character type homes look great, the basic mock versions are sickening...... Flat roofed houses never date. Google modernism as a start, its not a new trend. Louise Thatcher, great pictures! Choose wall cladding carefully such as 'colorbond' custom orb as the sheets are cheap but the trims and flashings are quite expensive as they're custom made. The advantage is no painting but can scratch very easily and is then almost impossible to repair without replacing the whole sheet......... Have a look at 'EcoPly', 'ShadowClad', etc. as these give a great look without the expense of the custom made flashings. Scyon have a great looking 'weatherboard' called 'Linea'.

Hi arcmaz Great house - fantastic 60's modern look - Harry Sidler (Modernist Architect 1923-2006 exponent of the Bauhaus style in Australia, mainly Sydney) would have loved the interpretation, its a good style, don't change it will pay dividends in the long run. It would be good if there was a plan of the house,and a plan of the block this would allow some relatively accurate planning proposals. If you had the real-state plan with the block plan it would help a lot. In terms of making the place bigger and retaining the style I would suggest that the extension (maybe one room and an en suite depending on a budget) be a block in the today's current style, but linked to the existing house via a "link" (Link =small walkway). This would allow you to retain the style, but not be dominated by a past period, I have done this a few times and it has worked fairly well. If you are looking for three bedrooms it might be best to add a master bedroom with a bathroom, and then maybe living areas with back yard access. There may be other approaches depending on the current layout that could be considered, but I would retain as much as the original as possible, and only make small cosmetic changes until you are ready for a worthy development. I know I really really need to get up in the roof (or more likely get someone else to get up there, it's a small access hole and a long way off the ground and I'm not great at either of those things with a ladder). If I'm right about a max ~3m height in existing roof space we could fit ~3-3.5m wide room essentially above the hallway of original house and meet minimum heights (I think....). And then hopefully a little wider under an extended roofline to the back, without it being a full/boxy second storey extension. Here is a super rough sketch of the current layout of the house. The dotted orange lines are drawing over existing roofline when I overlay a screenshot from google maps, so not 100%. I don't have a proper house plan, will need to get something drawn up. It pretty much fills the block width (~0.5m from wall to fence each side), but we have heaps of backyard to extend into (`18m from current back of house to back fence), but do plan to eventually add a separate garage accessed from back lane and want to keep a big backyard. No important view to chase, but looking directly south is over green space/park, every other direction is pretty suburban. If the roof conversion is possible, I think I want to convert the small bedroom 3 into a family bathroom, kitchen into a 3rd bedroom, split the dining in half and make that into a study off the lounge. Then push the whole back wall out probably 2.5-3ish metres and in that open space, fit a powder room, staircase, laundry/mudroom with external access, living/dining/kitchen. Possibly fit a scullery into the other half of the current dining? And put a covered deck off the back. This is the real design dilemma I guess, where exactly do the stairs go (against wall shared with lounge?), and if no roof conversion, then it's either raise up full storey (still need to work out where stairs go) or work out how to add a master suite to single storey extension. I'm really struggling with getting that to work.

If you look at these photos of your home and a comparison photo. Okay, the photos of your home may not be as neat a job, but the work completed is the same. Only difference with gutters, as mentioned by siriusky is the placement of the gutters on the boundary wall. But if a down pipe is required for this side of the home, then that ,is maybe why they have completed the job with the gutters along the wall not on top. An inspector will check everything and give you piece of mind. But the job may of been done correctly in the first place?
