Skirting board assistance!

Hello, we're doing a renovation and need to bring these two stairs forward (floorboards will replace the tiles and carpet)

Ideally the first step would be in line with where the carpet and the tiles currently meet. If we do this, how do we wrap the victorian skirting boards around a corner given there is a different elevation? - The issue is on the left hand side.

Alternatively we can bring the new stair further onto the where the tape is currently shown with the skirting board to then be able to do the vertical elevation on the left hand side prior to going around a corner - although this isn't the preferred option.

Any assistance before we commit? - photos as examples would be greatly appreciate if possible too

Is the nose of stair plush with wall, noting the nose overhangs the riser? You can set back stair half a tile and finish as you have now. Or bring first step out.

thank you - we're going to be partially knocking down the wall on the left hand side (where the stairs are now) to then build a door. This is why the stairs need to come forward. We can get away with them being flush

I have a conventional concave cornice and I get plenty of cobwebs in the 10mm step out from the wall plaster (but not so much the step out from the ceiling plaster, or maybe it doesn't show so much there). If you are replacing the ceiling I would go with a shadowline rather than square-set which will show every wobble in your plaster or paint. I don't think it is feasible to install a shadowline into an existing ceiling (which will usually have a ragged edge under the existing cornice) but I could be wrong...

I agree with the other comments, wait until you white wash, but I would be tempted to paint some colour of the walls if you cannot remove the trim (it might be there to tidy up the joins).

Thanks so much for the comments. It’s literally cutting & installing the skirting boards only (no architraves) and we are providing the boards already painted (5.4m lengths). It will be a clear run as it‘ll be right after the new floors are laid so no furniture around at all. Quite a lot of angle cuts though. Still reasonable? I suppose it comes down to peace of mind on a quality job or take a punt on a handyman (unfortunately don’t know any so would have to take a chance). Oh dear, wish the budget wasn’t so tight otherwise I wouldn’t hesitate.

Plywood interior walls and no skirting boards

I did mine in plywood and since we put up the panels ourselves the alignment was ... heroically attempted. My solution (NB: I’m a little unorthodox) was 6” high skirting boards painted in a mint green (think old-fashioned ice-cream truck) which I also used on the wooden surrounds for the aluminium windows, which are near-black aluminium called Ironsand. It works with my extremely-NOT-minimalist eclectic style, but it certainly wouldn’t work for everyone. Note: there are major advantages to plywood that actually do make it a cost-effective choice over plasterboard. For one, you only need to choose plywood with 1 good or excellent face, as the other is never seen; second is while you save on a plasterer, you also save on 3+ coats of paint (though you can always paint/stain/whitewash it later if you want); third is that every off-cut and leftover sheet can be used for furniture, shelving, all kinds of things — I built my entire wardrobe out of it by laminating sheets and threading a galvanised pipe through for the rail. On top of that, hanging pictures and light fittings is super easy (no anchors required, just nail anywhere) and it’s almost indestructible compared with plasterboard. I may be a bit of a fan, lol. Just, whatever you do, don’t spill red ink on it — unless you like the old slaughterhouse look. 🤷‍♂️

Hello Liam, with the height of your Skirting (being the same height or lower than the first step) your Skirting in the lower room will usually just finish up to the side of the protruding step in the corner. For the second step which is actually the higher floor, on the left this skirting will just finish square, & stop at the corner of the wall. This end of the skirting will be mitered so the moulding returns to the wall. On the right this will be done the same as the existing skirting has been done with an angle; but just brought forward.
