Kitchen layout help: limited wall space, pantry/raised oven possible?
We’re rebuilding our kitchen from scratch after a full demo, with window positions/sizes fixed. This is our current sketch.
Our ideal setup would include:
- a wall oven and microwave in a tall cabinet
- a pantry
- bench space wrapping all the way to the peninsula, since the north window will act as a serving window to the deck
The challenge is that the main south wall is pretty limited, and the corner isn’t very useful for everyday access or prep. That makes it hard to fit the cooktop, fridge, pantry, and a raised oven without compromising the layout. We may have to put the oven under the cooktop after all.
A few other constraints:
- both windows are very low and will sit almost flush with the benchtop
- the sink is on the west side, so we’re worried about water/splashback and constant wiping around the window
- we definitely do not want the sink in the peninsula
- ideally we also don’t want tall cabinets jammed right up against the windows
- ceilings are high, but super-high cabinets aren’t that practical to reach
Any advice on the layout? And any thoughts on custom made cabinets vs cheaper flatpack options? (Based in Brisbane)

I'd have a fridge , built in cupboards to the ceilings that way you can incorporate the wall oven in the design and forget about the bench space..then you'd have roughly 2 metres of a whole wall storage.. from your photo you don't seem to have much storage.. sorry misread since you need cook top. 3metres is quite small as fridge is usually 1m then oven .60-75 which leaves with about 1.25m for pantry and bench? not sure looks like you're trying to fit too much in that space have you got measurements for your hob and fridge ?...See Moreneed help w/ kitchen layout (advice on sink/oven placement & function)
Comments (22)Our island is 900 depth, 2400 wide, with a sink in the middle (opposite the cooktop), which works well for us. Plenty of prep area either side of the sink (mind you, it's a single undermount sink, about 500mm wide, with no drainboard). If we were going to use the island for actual meals, ours is only deep enough for a person either side of the sink. So, if you're thinking of having the island as a dining area, go to the 1200 depth. Just walk around it to clean it. On the other hand, if the island is going to be for prep, and a place for guests to prop up a glass of wine and chat while you're getting dinner, 900 is fine. Our dishwasher is to the immediate left of the sink, and we have pull out waste bins underneath the sink. We have 1200 mm space from island to the wall side and the range top, and about the same to the other ends. Our fridge, which isn't huge, is in a 900 mm+ cavity which would be big enough for a deeper fridge. It's in relatively the same place your fridge is, and works fine there. Hinges are on the non-kitchen side of the door, so it opens into the kitchen. Cabinets beside it are a bit more in depth, so fridge and cabinets line up nicely. 850 for your fridge seems reasonable to me. I wouldn't put that study where you have it: I think you'll need all of that butler's pantry for butlering type storage. I am leaning towards your design and using the corner as appliance/pantry. The bifold from bench height up would certainly work really well functionally but I’m not sure I’d like the look. I’ve sketched up having the area 800 deep to house the fridge and to have a step in pantry/appliance cupboard (500 deep bench, 300 step in cavity). 2 variations of the cupboard, first with sliding doors opening from centre (approx 1m opening so might feel a bit pokey), or second with perhaps stacker doors to right or bifold (this would block off bench space between pantry and sink when open though). This cupboard would be pretty big (2280mm) so don’t think we’d need the appliance cupboard next to dining area. And could have oven under cooktop. Comments (26)I understand the beam being installed when you did your earlier extension as that was an external wall, that's why I have suggested keeping part of the wall next to the island which was also an external wall, to support this, I will check this in the drawing to ensure it lines up for you. By opening up this wall as much as possible you are allowing more light back into the house The cost of running plumbing across I think is negative/comparable to moving the plumbing for the re positioned laundry and kitchen and removing any load bearing walls. Storage in the new kitchen is a big 2900 x 900 island of drawers for easy access, I have added a wall oven but that could become a 600 pantry with drawers in the lower part with a shelf above for small appliances. The wall with the TV could be a wall of narrow built in storage to be used in any way you need. My reasonably new kitchen isn’t that different to your most recent mock up. I too would have preferred a wall oven but it didn’t work for the space. It’s a very easy kitchen to work in. The only thing I’d change is the drawer stat the base of the pantry. I’d prefer full doors.
