Hi Sobia. It is a tricky space w/lots of doors as you said. I take it you will place your couch on the long wall opposite stairway void? I see you like Scandinavia style. If you don't want a table and chairs for men to play cards, then would they play them at a coffee table? I think a smaller glass table and some chairs would work near the stairs void. Anyone sitting there could still see what's happening downstairs, and vice versa. Attached is a photo (first photo) I found on Houzz. If a coffee table will also fit in front of couch, I would go with a glass-topped one. Otherwise some nice side tables. Or, if you think a modern timber coffee table would suit, I can suggest some. The balcony view is crying out for a couple of armchairs and a side table between them, for you to enjoy your tea. They could be arranged somewhat facing the balcony, and the. Turned around when you are entertaining more people in the evening. See second photo. Does any of this sound like it addresses your purposes?

What a fantastic space! I absolutely love the fireplace-is that copper? What kind of timber was used for the various joinery? I would be inclined to paint the bricks behind the fireplace, as long as heat is not an issue (maybe there are special paints for this application). If the paint needs freshening, I would do that too. If the joinery is to be left as is, then a neutral paint is good, but I do like the idea of something besides white, maybe a warmer colour. I would also be tempted to paint the half-wall paneling at the end of the couch the same colour as might be chosen for the bricks. i realise the pool table light goes with the joinery in the room, but if an edgier room is wanted, I think it needs replacing with big black industrial-looking pendant lights. Is the furniture in this room, as photographed, theirs or the previous owner's? I kind of like the bit of carpet I can see, but if the strong red doesn't suit your daughter and her husband, then certainly change it. An overall colour theme and style for this room needs to be decided upon before a major expense, IMO.

I would choose your paintings then take the colours from them for your cushions and throw. Add a textured rug. I think the large black TV coupled with the black TV cabinet detracts from the room. Lovely floors and paint colours. This should not be a hard project with such a lovely room and well chosen furniture.

@dreamer : That's exactly what it is, kitchenette - handy for drinks of water, making tea/coffee. We had a undermount sink there instead of vanity bowl, but the cabinet and stone was already cut which restricted use of undermount sink. We are happy with current setting of vanity bowl and pullout mixer. FYI....there are already two bathrooms upstairs ( 2separate basin inside them) so no need to run downstairs :) . @kate Sure, please allow me a day to visit site and do the actual measurements. But we are looking to see another place where we can setup a office table/chair or some sort of study nook. House is built as per the plans (ground floor is here).
