suggestions for this garden bed which runs along the back of the house and bbq area. Garden bed isnt very wide. The garden bed on the left has some plants in as seen which we will pull out. location in qld
You need to make the garden beds twice as wide this not only looks better it will slow you to plant at the front of the bed and keep any plant related dampness away from the house. Do you have a preferred look?
The beds will have to stay the same width atm, they are about 30-40cm wide. Im thinking something small , just green and maybe something taller in front of the bbq.
You could try viburnum, great lush evergreen foliage ‘emerald lustre ‘ is a standout, Xanadu is also a great plant, beautiful foliage and gives a tropical look, heliconia behind the barbecue would add a further tropical look to your landscape.
Garden beds should be at least 1m wide to give plants the root area and space they need. The skinny little bed you have is out of scale with the building. Julie's suggestions for hedges are perfect. You could put herbs in the area near the bbq if you really can't widen the beds
thanks for the suggestions. Its not meant to be a wide garden bed. its narrow as its only to grow a border type plant or small plants, not a hedge, as the grass doesnt grow along the house ..
As it is to remain a narrow bed, I would be sticking with hardy grasses like you already have - liriope, agapanthus, dianella, nandina or herbs like rosemary, oregano, thyme that can creep along and fill the space.
