Will our Renovation Look Appealing from the Street?
Comments (9)Having a closer look at the house, it could be possible to replace the small window next to your fireplace on the left with a door, and still enclosing the side if the garage, I would also install a timber balustrade form the original front door between all posts, so hat door could remain, but be within an enclosed walk corridor rather than wLk our onto a drive. The ballustrading could become a real feature, and be somewhat of an enclosed verandah if people were en lined to need fresh air, or may want to pollute it with a cigarette?? Either way, it will make better use of this side of the home, your windows are too beautiful to conceal and the light they bring in would be priceless. I think removing the brush front fence and installing a picket fence further beyond your front window could tie into the new balustrade m suggesting, and create a new front of house, and still enclose enough behind this feneline for a private and safe yard. I think I can see a timber gate or fence? This is where I would at a minimum put the new picket fence. Maybe say 1500mm high, which is still a nice view fence height from the street but dprivate enough not to see clothes hanging etc. Glad I could be of some help....See MoreFront of house
Comments (6)It looks like you have a great view from your house,it seems a shame to drive in and see a blank brick wall and some of the uglier parts of a modern life on display (air conditioner etc), so I agree some work here would really give your house a bit of zing. Everyone seems to like rendering / painting bricks, and usually I have my doubts . In this case, though, I think I agree with chubbychicky above, that rendering / painting the chimney could really make it a feature. The colours here are a bit dark, with the dark gravel and the dark bricks, so perhaps a lighter colour (maybe to match your poles on the verandah) with some exterior wall art would look good. You have a light above the chimney, so it could really highlight it at night. The air conditioner is a tough ask for any plant to deal with, as in summer it will generally be blowing hot air. Perhaps a wooden or metal slatted screen across the lower half of both walls and the chimney to hide the air conditioner and the ? grate in the bottom of the chimney. If you need to access that and the air-conditioner, you could make an unobtrusive gate. Plants could then go in front of that screen. Depending on budget, you could go the whole hog and get a laser cut screen with lights to hide the whole end of the house!...See MoreStreet appeal ideas
Comments (7)I would remove those two knobs on the railing at the bottom of the stairs, otherwise the railing would be OK and I would paint that a medium grey. I would paint any window frames a light grey which will tone in with the aluminium and the guttering a dark grey. I would also paint those two big gates at the side dark grey to draw attention away from them or get a new remote controlled gate, depending on finances. The verandah surface will need more and I would tile that with a tile that looks like timber in a weathered wood colour that has greyed. All this grey will tone down the red and orangey colour of the exterior and the tiles will stand up to the weather even though they look like wood. If you remove the hedge you might find more than you bargained for, but I would wait until the rest is done and then rethink the landscaping because the look will be different....See MoreHelp to improve our orange brick facade / overall curb appeal
Comments (11)Thank you oklouise The house started out as a small single storey fibro house (left section). By the time we bought it, it had a 2 storey extension 6.2m w x 12.1m d added to the right side and the whole house was bricked over - leaving a strange stairwell on the side of the new extension (which we faux brick stamped 15+ years ago as it was bright white). There is a small step down to the front verandah but still good head height. The current garage doors are also quite high at 2.5m and would not need to be as high when replaced. So hoping the bulk head (if that is all we come up with) would be consistent / level across the front. That was just my first thought, but fresh eyes and fresh/other ideas are welcome!...See MoreAnn
